A Good Book in a Forest of Mediocre Prog Fantasy

Progression Fantasy is a genre filled by hobbyists and amateurs which is part of why I love it. It’s full of crazy diversity and wild ideas.
…It’s also full of writers who write chapters, not books. Will Wright writes books, not chapters. Will Wright notably has a degree in creative writing and you really can tell. Brandon Sanderson is the same way and says that you can tell the difference between an amateur and professional writer immediately.
This is to say that reading this story, I was unshocked to find the author has an MFA in Creative Writing. It’s immediately obvious to me that this is a pro writer. This is a BOOK, not a series of chapters.
I really cannot wait for the next release!

This story keeps getting better! The author balances tough topics with levity expertly. One chapter, I feel gut wrenching horror at the actions of the antagonists, and the next I’ll be chuckling at Lauren’s scathing jabs. This is a sleeper hit for real!

There is something ephemerally captivating about this story. I’m a fan of time loop stories, but this one feels really well done. I found every chapter worth it.
There is almost a nihilistic glee to seeing the MC’s frustration at trying to save people when the universe itself seems hellbent of making them dead.
People complain about the narrator but I think he works. The people he’s rendering are hilariously flawed and the dialogue is often goofy or pithy, but when he discribes that creeping dread of facing your mortality for the upteenth time, I still believe it.
I literally laughed so hard at his rendition of Locker Man that I cried.
I love this story and implore readers to ignore what bafflingly low ratings this book had when I wrote this review.

As a long time fan of LitRPG, this is one that feels pretty special. Not an overwhelming power fantasy, but the protagonist’s potential is there. Not torture porn, but the tension is there. The fantasy elements feel familiar, but the novelty is there.
It’s a good time, for sure.

The skill name flaw is overblown

For those unaware, the narrator prerecorded the skill names so the intonation doesn’t quite fit the dialog when it’s said. It’s clear that it’s done for a robot artificial vibe. It’s a little jarring at first, but I got used to it pretty quick and found an excellent story within.
Don’t let the hate for this performance foible get in the way of enjoying a well done prog fantasy story!
