Over two centuries have passed since the Third World War reduced civilization to ashes in a global nuclear inferno. Unforgiving geomagnetic storms rage, blocking out the sun and poisoning the radioactive Earth. Humanity clings to survival above the tempestuous skies in giant airships, sustained by Hell Divers—brave souls who risk their lives plunging to the surface for essential parts and supplies.

NSS + Hell Divers + Ray Porter = A Triple Treat

I love the HD series and Ray Porter's narration so this was a no-brainer. It was interesting listening to the "before times" of the HD books, before X becomes involved. I definitely would like more behind the scenes type of books like this in the HD series.

I like Scalzi, but...
Revisado: 03-27-25
I like the stories that Scalzi writes. My absolute favorite is The Dispatcher series (Zachary Quinto narrating). However, my biggest peeve with his stuff is the repetitive use of "he said," "she said," "they said" with dialogue. It is very distracting to me when reading/listening to his books. Otherwise, decent stuff. Also, I need more Dispatcher and Zachary Quinto. Please and thank you!

Such an amazing book
Revisado: 01-18-25
I don't know how to write a review to convey how I felt about this story. I loved it so much. The narration is perfect. This book made me feel all kinds of emotions as I listened. I could not stop listening to it. When I absolutely could not listen, I couldn't wait to get back to it. I could truly see this as a movie or TV show.

No spoilers but thankfully this isn't the end of the Helldivers 'Verse. I have so many questions about that world and I'm glad it's going to continue in prequels and spin-offs. Thanks for creating this series.

A riveting tale of bravery in the face of injustic
Revisado: 11-03-23
I picked up this novel after seeing a Joe Hill newsletter touting the brilliance of this story. I'm glad I did. The saga of Robert and his sister Gloria is mostly heartbreaking, despicable, infuriating, but in the end, uplifting. I expected more horror in the form of the ghosts depicted, not in the ways of the adults in the story. It sickened me when I thought of real people being treated this way as I know has happened in the past, and still happens to this day. I'm not sure how to change the world so this doesn't keep happening, but all I can say is be kind to others. You don't know what that person has going on in their lives. They may just need one person to show them kindness to make a difference in their lives.

Fan-freaking-tastic
Revisado: 09-03-23
I have missed Joe and the gang! Such a great book and narration, as usual. Jonathan Maberry is stepping up his game with this installment of the Ledger series. Some of the gadgets, weapons, and theories in this story would be scary if they were real. This went to some dark places and did not leave me with the warm & fuzzies. I have a feeling the next one is going to be even darker and scarier. Can't wait.

Annoying female narrator
Revisado: 07-09-23
The female narrator has a very annoying way of saying certain words that it distracts from the story. It's the way she pronounces "says" (which is in there a lot) and oddly enough "calves." You can tell she may normally have a non-American accent and I'm not sure if that is why it is odd.
The story is decent, but I'm not sure why the author switches between male and female narrators. She uses the female narrator a lot more than the male and it is jarring at times when it switches. There is a twist to the story that I didn't see coming so that was good.

Why did the narrator change the style of naarration in the 3rd book. It is so distracting and irritating. Haven't finished it yet but had to comment on the narration.

Historia
Everyone has wanted their favorite book to be real, if only for a moment. Everyone has wished to meet their favorite characters, if only for a day. But be careful in that wish, for even a history laid in ink can be repaid in flesh and blood, and reality is far deadlier than fiction...especially on Addington Isle.

Author narrator isn't always a good thing.
Revisado: 04-28-23
For me, this was hard to get into because of the narration. The narrator (also the author) is monotone and also has a bad habit of making his hard c's (such as words with - CL or CR) very harsh. There is no differentiation of the characters and oftentimes I was confused as to who was speaking. The narrator also spoke fast and I had to reduce the speed to 0.9 in order to understand him better. There are also fairly long pauses in between the chapters that made me think something happened to the audio. If you are looking for Ray Porter or Greg Tremblay or RC Bray type of narration, then skip this version and get a different format. If you enjoy Wil Wheaton type of narration then you might be ok.

Historia
In a strange little home built into the branches of a grove of trees, live three robots—fatherly inventor android Giovanni Lawson, a pleasantly sadistic nurse machine, and a small vacuum desperate for love and attention. Victor Lawson, a human, lives there too. They’re a family, hidden and safe. The day Vic salvages and repairs an unfamiliar android labelled “HAP,” he learns of a shared dark past between Hap and Gio–a past spent hunting humans. When Hap unwittingly alerts robots from Gio’s former life to their whereabouts, the family is no longer hidden and safe.

Outstanding narration for an outstanding story
Revisado: 04-27-23
I have "read" other TJ Klune novels (I am going through an audiobook phase) and have enjoyed them. This novel was no different. From the beginning, I was engrossed. The narrator was absolutely perfect for this story. I loved how he brought the characters to life. The voices he did for everyone were perfect. I could not imagine a more perfect person for this story. I was engrossed in this book and listened to it almost nonstop. I highly recommend this story, narrator, and author.
