Historia
Something is wrong. We all know it. American life expectancy is declining for a third straight year. Birth rates are dropping. Nearly half of us think the other political party isn’t just wrong; they’re evil. We’re the richest country in history, but we’ve never been more pessimistic. What’s causing the despair? In Them, bestselling author and U.S. senator Ben Sasse argues that, contrary to conventional wisdom, our crisis isn’t really about politics. It’s that we’re so lonely we can’t see straight—and it bubbles out as anger. Local communities are collapsing.

flawed, but worthwhile
Revisado: 12-06-18
While Sasse occasionally falls prey to logical errors in his arguments, they mostly pertain to the fine points (and when the errors do occur, they are usually a result of stretching an argument in his eagerness to prove that government aid is unhealthy and non-traditional families destructive), and the broad strokes of theory remain compelling.

Historia
In his audiobook, A Higher Loyalty, former FBI director James Comey shares his never-before-told experiences from some of the highest stakes situations of his career in the past two decades of American government, exploring what good, ethical leadership looks like and how it drives sound decisions. His journey provides an unprecedented entry into the corridors of powe, and a remarkable lesson in what makes an effective leader.

Integrity, grace, and hope
Revisado: 04-22-18
Though I may not agree with JamesComey on some of his decisions regarding the events leading up to the election, A Higher Loyalty is a truly lovely, inspiring, gracefully written, humble, and hopeful book that actually brought me to tears. Comey's integrity, ethical rigor, empathy, fair-mindedness, and optimism are a model for all of us, and his takeaway from the "forest fire" now raging is optimistic without being saccharine. Oddly, and unexpectedly, this is one of my favorite reads of the year. Thank you, Mr. Comey, for sharing this gift with the American public.

Historia
The science of emotion is in the midst of a revolution on par with the discovery of relativity in physics and natural selection in biology. Leading the charge is psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett, whose research overturns the long-standing belief that emotions are automatic, universal, and hardwired in different brain regions. Instead, Barrett shows, we construct each instance of emotion through a unique interplay of brain, body, and culture.

Pioneering work on emotional experience
Revisado: 01-08-18
Well-written and fascinating. Barrett makes a very compelling argument for a new way of understanding emotions and emotional experience. Particularly useful and important for anyone in mental health or neuroscience. Highly recommended.

Historia
In July 2004, Barack Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke to Americans across the political spectrum. Now, in The Audacity of Hope, Senator Obama calls for a different brand of politics: a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the "endless clash of armies" we see in Congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of "our improbable experiment in democracy".

riveting, poetic, and complex
Revisado: 08-28-17
A morally ambiguous, psychologically complex, and riveting page-turner that takes, even more so than the first book in the series, the first genuinely unique take on Sherlock Holmes that I have encountered in decades. First rate.

When Dr. Brandy Engler opened her sex therapy practice for women in Manhattan, she got a big surprise. Most of the calls were from men. They wanted to talk about womanizing, porn addiction, impotence, prostitutes - and most of all, love.

Insightful, compelling, and unique
Revisado: 10-28-16
Among a slew of psychotherapy books that have flooded bookstores over the last few years, this gem stands out in both its subject matter and depth. Treating sex with both frankness and complexity, Engler broadens our conceptions of what motivates sexual behavior and fantasy, moving it out of the simplistic behaviorist conceptions so common in the sex therapy world, and treating it with the depth and awe characteristic of the analytic therapies. The case vignettes are woven skillfully into the author's own love story, the insights gained from her work, reverberating in her life. As any good therapist knows, our patients change our lives, just as we change theirs, and it is refreshing to find an open acknowledgement of this truth in a book on therapy. Eloquent and enlightening, this book is a terrific read for lay readers and clinicians alike. Highly recommended.
