This is one of the best audible plus series I've listened to. The world-building and themes are not just interesting but thought-provoking. The narrator does a good job with a diverse cast. The conclusion doesn't drag, but, unlike some other listeners, I didn't think it was too abrupt.

Fast paced and entertaining. if not one I'd choose to spend a credit on.

I read some negative reviews before listening. The book seems to have triggered a few people: woke antichristian bias, blah blah blah. I don't think those reviews should discourage anyone considering listening. The behavior and rhetoric of those characters is actually understated compared to what we can find any given day just turning on the news.

Bit silly even without the liberties of the movie

I suppose we should all respect the combined powers of faith, superstition, imagination, stress, and, last but not least, marching bands. if nothing else it serves as a cautionary tale for that.

worthwhile series

Overall this is a solid, even-tempered series with a few irritating tropes. As the story evolves over five books, you may start to cringe at the lizard explanation, Kris joking about her future children, Anna being a fearsome bloodhound, and especially Anna being supremely competent while all other professionals often barely succeed tying their shoes. Still, the plots are interesting and none of the books are regrettably bad.

2nd book in a row that is mostly flavor. Also narrator sounds as if she is reading promos for a series of cheap products early on, when not voicing dialogue. Thankfully that improves.

These are some of the best organized crime stories I've listened to. My only issue is that, three books in, the banter, quips, and even heartfelt dialogue are all regurgitated over and over again.

good story, good narration

The story is engaging, and I liked the narration too. I guess the latter is a matter of taste considering some of the reviews, and I'm glad I wasn't swayed by those. While you know you're having a novel read to you here, rather than some kind of audio play, I found her voice, pacing, and characterizations to be undistracting and a pleasant listen.

Great pulp science-fi

Excellent story. Even with every chapter, no matter how short, ending with a melodramatic “in this fallen world.” Seriously annoying. I disregarded reviews and almost wish I hadn’t. After the thirtieth or fortieth ham-handed closing with it, I was about sick. It actually detracts from what is an imaginative, tightly-written post-apocalyptic action masterpiece. So brace yourself, if you like the genre, still worth it.

Kate Reading is generally a great narrator, but here she is perfect. Definitely worth adding if you’ve enjoyed any of Maugham’s work.
