Historia
The Rise of the West is famous for its ambitious scope and intellectual rigor. In it, McNeill challenges the Spengler-Toynbee view that a number of separate civilizations pursued essentially independent careers, and argues instead that human cultures interacted at every stage of their history. The author suggests that, from the Neolithic beginnings of grain agriculture to the present, major social changes in all parts of the world were triggered by new or newly important foreign stimuli, and he presents a persuasive narrative of world history to support this claim.

The greatest world history book in English
Revisado: 12-18-23
If you're trying to understand what happened in the human past on the broadest level, there's no better book that I know of. From the rise of agriculture to 1963, the story is of the formation of new communities and their interaction, the diffusion of new and better ways of living, culminating in the rise of science and the democratic revolution in the last several centuries. Dense, meant for a knowledgable reader, an attempt to capture 'all there is' in the entire field of history all in one book. It has its failings, but they're trivial next to its merits. Read this book.

Historia
In this magnificent synthesis of military, technological, and social history, William H. McNeill explores a whole millennium of human upheaval and traces the path by which we have arrived at the frightening dilemmas that now confront us. McNeill moves with equal mastery from the crossbow - banned by the Church in 1139 as too lethal for Christians to use against one another - to the nuclear missile, from the sociological consequences of drill in the 17th century to the emergence of the military-industrial complex in the 20th.

Historia
Scattered over the territory between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea lie the remnants of failed peace proposals, international summits, secret negotiations, UN resolutions, and state-building efforts. The conventional story is that these well-meaning attempts at peacemaking were repeatedly, perhaps terminally, thwarted by violence. Through a rich interweaving of reportage, historical narrative, and powerful analysis, Nathan Thrall presents a startling counterhistory.

Thrall is the best writer on Israel-Palestine
Revisado: 06-20-21
An extraordinarily deep, well-informed diagnosis of the tragic political mess in Israel-Palestine. Thrall's an impeccable scholar, but he also feels the suffering the conflict is causing. This book doesn't cover everything, but it's the best source for everything it does.
