Simply Delightful

Anne of Green Gables is a classic--a timeless friend within a book to whom one can return time after time and still find joy. I decided to introduce my daughter to the Anne of Green Gables series on our drives to and from school each day as we love listening to audio books during that time. Rachel McAdams is a delightful narrator who changes her pitch and cadence ever so slightly for each of the characters. We loved her performance so much that my daughter wanted to know who was reading it. She even started referring to McAdams as simply "Rachel" as in "don't forget to turn Rachel on today." When we finished the audio book moved on to the second book in the series, my daughter was devastated that it wasn't McAdams reading it (and so was I, but that's another review since the narrator of that was beyond terrible).

Weird Cadence

I love the story of Anne of Green Gables and the entire Anne series. Anne of Avonlea is a bit slower overall than Anne of Green Gables, but it is a vital piece of the series. My issue is not the story nor the punctuation within it; however, punctuation seems to have escaped Beth Kesler's attention. She pauses at completely random moments that are not dictated by punctuation nor are they needed for effect. The result is an audio version to which it is nearly impossible to listen. I quit listening, in fact, after the first 45 minutes or so. My 7 year old, with whom I listen to books on our way to and from school, noticed it right away and asked if we could please turn it off even though she wanted to hear the story I told her that it might get better, but it didn't. We ended up purchasing the story again but with a different narrator.
