Important if you're suffering at your job
Revisado: 11-09-19
A different approach to corporate culture, which is rarer than it should be. I don't ever read business culture books, so since my job required this one, I made a point to drink the koolaid, and it's paid off personally.

Really helpful perspective and pragmatic advice
Revisado: 05-19-19
So far I've used one idea he had: Write down three top things you want to get done today. This has increased my efficiency a bit. I wander off them, but often, the next morning, I look over them and see that I accomplished a few of them. I loved his idea about scheduling things rather than creating a todo list, too. If you really want to do it, schedule it!
He has lots of studies that show how attention span works - it's very scientific. When you realize you have hard physical inherited limits, then it's not all about willpower and "just focus!" We can increase our focus, but we have to understand how it works and what it needs from you in order to work at maximum.

Very efficient and tight summary of many models
Revisado: 05-19-19
I enjoyed this book because it didn't get deep into the details, just skimmed the surface, which let me see it as more of a reminder rather than an in-depth. It also isn't judgmental about the different models, which means it doesn't help you decide which ones to use, either. You'll have to try them to decide.

Historia
By now, everyone knows that bad data extorts an enormous toll, adding huge (though often hidden) costs and making it more difficult to make good decisions and leverage advanced analyses. While the problems are pervasive and insidious, they are also solvable! As Tom Redman "the Data Doc" explains in Getting in Front on Data, the secret lies in getting the right people in the right roles to "get in front" of the management and social issues that lead to bad data in the first place.

For those who want to change the data organization
Revisado: 05-19-19
Very practical understanding given by Thomas, of a very spaghetti-like problem. I am the king of the "hidden data factory," and I am very proud of it. It is one of the only things a person can be proud of. These upper echelon managers that Dr. Redman refers to, the champions of cross-departmental efforts at data process reform, don't exist. He must be hallucinating. Still, like unicorns, they are perfect and ideal.
I bought a physical copy of the book, to put on my desk at work, because my head manager asked during the interview, "What are the last two non-fiction books you've read?" I've lately realized that all of my managers wanted to see more "thinky" behavior from me, more awareness of the business rather than just an extreme tight focus on data.

Agile died
Revisado: 05-19-19
The book is okay for what it is. Even if the topic of Agile was still relevant, the performance, as Audible calls it, is lacking and deadpan, and there is a feeling of route machination in the writing. In fact, I shouldn't blame the performance. It's like blaming an actor for a bad play. The writing is mechanical. I wanted to understand the day-to-day suffering through of Agile/scrum. Now that I've have three companies try to inflict Agile on me, I've realized that Agile is just another sell for the shareholders or the clients, even the auditors. "Oh you do Agile?" awesome, send us a contract.
People who try to do Agile quickly find that it becomes a tourniquet around their creativity. Creativity is messy. Agile is not.

The world is a scary place. And your brain is trying to make sense of it 24/7/365. Your brain also loves making shortcuts, even if good judgement and logic is thrown out the window. Sometimes it doesn’t have time to calculate all of the potential possibilities, outcomes, consequences, and results. So it makes a quick decision. And sometimes, that decision can be done too quickly.

I may end up listening to this everyday on the way in to work. I let myself talk myself into thinking I can’t do something, without fully analyzing if I could do that thing. Try it.
