Historia
He’s a well-traveled consultant arriving home at a metropolitan airport. He’s also become accustomed to extra scrutiny for his brown skin and many-stamped passport. But when he’s whisked away, isolated, and chained in a stark white room without explanation, his reality crumbles. Because what he doesn’t know is the most damning evidence against him.

A few Horrifying Aspects
Revisado: 02-10-21
Hearing this made me very paranoid and I couldn't help but do some research to brush up on my rights while listening. But I didn't care about the main character.

That Voice
Revisado: 02-10-21
I was so excited for this. Then I very rapidly went from feeling ok to being frustrated. I love watching people review things I do that every day. But this was annoying, I started Viewing Lindy's voice as Obnoxious. I was fine with the idea of hearing someone review a movie I hadn't seen before but she narrated with so much sarcasm that I couldn't understand how she actually felt about the movie. She also rated the movies based off of a movie. A movie which I never saw. Why not just out of 10?

Hearing this in audible was kind of funny since whenever I heard "fat babe" it sounded like "frappe" and I pretty much adored all of the stories except for one. I really appreciated the mention of asexual people.

I like the physical
Revisado: 02-02-21
This book was very easy to read. I could easily loose 2 or 3 hours in this book. The plot twist got me a lot sadly they were mainly in the first 2/3rds of the book but after that it felt like a will they won't they end up together love maybe square maybe triangle. Sure Finlay wasn't attached to anyone but it felt like a subplot I had to keep in my head was "who will she choose?" Mainly because I know whoever she hung around added to the plot. Everytime I thought I had something figured out they'd swerve me and I think a lot of people that read this would feel that way. This book is extremely smart and things fall into place perfectly and that's kind of my main issue. I knew everything would work out for Finlay no matter if it subverted every expectation I had I knew she would be fine and it took away from the tension for me.
Spoilery thoughts
* I don't understand what the last page of the epilogue was supposed to mean.
* Though the dialogue is very sensual and even though there are a few kisses there were no sex scenes. (Which is great for me) Most Horror related things be it movies or books they tend to be extremely unnecessarily sexual (which I don't feel comfortable with) but in this book it went nowhere.
* Why did Finlay say she only wanted a to keep things simple and be alone for a bit only to maybe two chapters later end up with the first man she lied to. And why did she have to tell this person the whole INCRIMINATING truth?
* What Happened to Finlay's lesbian sister subplot about her looking for a relationship?

Gaslighting for over 2 Hours
Revisado: 01-11-21
After 2 hours of being gaslight through our main character Britney we finally get to explore Horrorland. While I was frustrated beyond belief for 80% of this book I will still give it credit. It did have two good plot twist that I (A 20 year old) didn't see coming. If you can stand that you only get approximately 35 minutes in horrorland but everything before that feels like it isn't worth it. Majority of the book is just frustrating. The parents are the worse part, I couldn't stand them.

Keep in mind this book was published in 1898
Revisado: 01-11-21
I couldn't help but make a few observations. This book very easily (like the Disney movie adaptation) features racial ideals. I know there are no poc characters but their is a "proper" dragon that wants to appeal to "proper" people and is seen as better than other dragons. He even does labor. I couldn't get it out of my head for 40 minutes and it doesn't make my claim seem lesser since this book was published in 1898.

Historia
Maya Angelou’s unforgettable collection of poetry lends its name to the documentary film about her life, And Still I Rise, as seen on PBS’s American Masters. “It is true poetry she is writing,” M. F.K . Fisher has observed, “not just rhythm, the beat, rhymes. I find it very moving and at times beautiful. It has an innate purity about it, unquenchable dignity.... It is astounding, flabbergasting, to recognize it, in all the words I read every day and night...it gives me heart, to hear so clearly the caged bird singing and to understand her notes.”

I want full versions of the songs
Revisado: 01-07-21
Some things like word "crippled" was used and now it does come off as outdated, but aside from that everything else feels relevant. Btw When she did use the word she meant no ill intent quite the opposite actually. Researching her I have found that she was also a huge supporter of queer+ people that's something that moat in the black community don't care for even now.
As for the music I found it beautiful and would've loved for it have been made into a fully recorded song. The Narrator on Audible was beyond amazingly chosen.

At once a powerful evocation of his early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice to both the individual and the body politic, James Baldwin galvanized the nation in the early days of the civil rights movement with this eloquent manifesto. The Fire Next Time stands as one of the essential works of our literature.

I can easily say that I enjoyed 'My Dungeon Shook: A Letter To My Nephew' way better than the second essay.
I took more notes and it invited me to think rather than ponder on what I was being told unlike 'Down At The Cross', which is unfortunate since it's the longer Essay.

Historia
In the Dream House is Carmen Maria Machado's engrossing and wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad, and a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural representations of psychological abuse. Tracing the full arc of a harrowing relationship with a charismatic but volatile woman, Machado struggles to make sense of how what happened to her shaped the person she was becoming. And it's that struggle that gives the book its original structure: each chapter is driven by its own narrative trope - the haunted house, erotica, the bildungsroman....

Unnecessarily over sexualized
Revisado: 12-03-20
Most people won't tell you about how sexual this book is. It'll go from something dark and sad to a very vulgar sex scene the next chapter. While I get the point to show how unstable it feels when you are being abused it became very annoying and led to my quick frustration.
I think my main appreciation in this book besides the vulnerability was the factual insertions and personal ideas about them. We get theories about queer history and how people view fat people of not deserving better love and the effects (mainly on your body) of going through abuse.
