Historia
A pair of fierce but beautiful eyes look out from the undergrowth of conifers. The eyes follow every movement in the great herd of plant-eating dinosaurs that mills around the open meadows, moving back and forth with the rapid scanning of a hunter who is thinking about everything she sees. She is an intelligent killer.

Why is this abridged?
Revisado: 10-07-24
I enjoyed this take on Raptor Red, but I could’ve done without the sound effects, as they get extremely repetitive.
My low rating is primarily due to the fact that this is an abridged version of a 270 page book- which is absolutely absurd and unnecessary. Should’ve featured the full text.

They have called their book Ayoade on Ayoade: A Cinematic Odyssey. Take the journey, and your life will never be the same again.

Witness as a one time master of cinema hits rock bottom. Sad proof that the gifts of artistry are no bar to arrogance and madness.

Historia
Justin Zorn and Leigh Marz take us on an unlikely journey—from the West Wing of the White House to San Quentin’s death row; from Ivy League brain research laboratories to underground psychedelic circles; from the temperate rainforests of Olympic National Park to the main stage at a heavy metal festival—to explore the meaning of silence and the art of finding it in any situation. Golden reveals how to go beyond the ordinary rules and tools of mindfulness. It’s a field guide for navigating the noise of the modern world—not just the noise in our ears but also on our screens and in our heads.

Some useful info but…
Revisado: 09-11-23
The philosopy that Golden presents is framed in a series vignettes, incomplete stories of folks whom have found means to appreciate silence in some way. I am of two minds on this book. In general, Golden makes a good case for slowing things down, shutting off the electronics and embracing mental silence.
But be warned- the book is genuinely bad.
Golden is largely lacking in substance. Vaguely told stories of a few folks are offered up without actually coctributing anything meaningful to the thesis. Often these seem to lean on the usage of the word "silence" rather than the philosopy presented. Worse, sometimes the stories seem shoehorned in; having little to do with the principles the author is suggesting, and instead focusing on social issues. I don’t disagree with the authors stance on these issues- I disagree with them being presented in this book, on this topic of all topics.
“This rain sure has been nice.”
“Yeah. It cuz the republicrats/demicans ruin everything.”
The writing isn’t great, often sliding into waxing introspection in a ponderous, melodramatic style frequently verging on the comical. This poetic bent is compounded occasionally when the author reaches for a word without seeming to fully understand what it means. Ultimately, the subject matter deserved a more thoughtful and concise approach by an experienced writer, with the assistance of an involved editor.

Historia
When it was first published, The Conscience of a Conservative reignited the American conservative movement and made Barry Goldwater a political star. It influenced countless conservatives in the United States and helped to lay the foundation for the Reagan Revolution in 1980. Just as vital today as it was then, this book addresses many topics that could be torn from today's headlines.

An important read
Revisado: 07-18-23
A polarizing figure even in his own time, Barry Goldwater’s book and vocal time in office set the stage for Republican come back in the United States. It’s probably a little easy to criticize some of the book’s presented philosophies with the gift of hindsight, they were still well reasoned at the time. Still, a worthy relief for anyone with a healthy interest in politics, regardless of your affiliation.

Historia
With this updated edition of his earlier book, A Place of My Own, listeners can revisit the inspired, intelligent, and often hilarious story of Pollan’s realization of a room of his own—a small, wooden hut, his “shelter for daydreams” — built with his admittedly unhandy hands. Inspired by both Thoreau and Mr. Blandings, A Place of My Own not only works to convey the history and meaning of all human building, it also marks the connections between our bodies, our minds, and the natural world.

Not Bad
Revisado: 07-14-23
Perhaps a little over-ponderous and self indulgent; but still a good book. I do wish he had spent more time on the construction, and less and less time on the opining over this and that.

Historia
Over the course of a 30-year career, Eddie Izzard has proven himself to be a creative chameleon, inhabiting the stage and film and television screens with an unbelievable fervor. Born in Yemen and raised in Ireland, Wales, and postwar England, he lost his mother at the age of six. In his teens he dropped out of university and took to the streets of London as part of a two-man escape act; when his partner went on vacation, Izzard kept busy by inventing a one-man act, and thus a career was ignited.

Interesting Story
Revisado: 04-27-23
Rather than a bridge, you could probably think of this is the extended version of the book. Eddie frequently perforates the reading with “footnote” which one can take as a sort of secondary dialogue added in tandem with the reading. Initially it was very offputting, as it went on I got used to it. All in all, though, it still felt a little too long. Still, that is very interesting person, and their story is worth the telling.

Historia
Nearly a half century into being a feminist and legal pioneer, something funny happened to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: The octogenarian won the Internet. Across America, people who weren't even born when Ginsburg made her name are tattooing themselves with her face, setting her famously searing dissents to music, and making viral videos in tribute.

Dry
Revisado: 03-10-23
In a more direct sense, I would describe the text as adequate; but taken as a literary work, it’s a bit disappointing. Large swaths of the text function as little more than a mass fact dump. Facts are certainly great, but I would’ve hoped for a layer of poeticism to tie it all together.
The reading itself was also quite bland. The author has incredible diction, but no sense for theatricality. I would suggest in the future recording, perhaps hiring a talented and impassioned actress.
Still, Ruth Bader Ginsburg remains quite compelling in her own right, so perhaps that’s enough.

Revisado: 03-09-23
Funny at times, touching at others. It will not be the best book you’ve ever read, but it’s entertaining to say the least. Brent Spiner’s performance is excellent, and I really enjoyed all the little cameos by other Star Trek actors.
