When he orders her to kill the future emperor, she fails, but discovers a secret that could bring the whole of the empire to its knees. slow burn fantasy romance
Revisado: 12-11-24
Enjoyed the building of the romance, the haunted bridegroom vs the haunted bride, the wife to be an assassin rather than the stereotype guy bodyguard. Nice magic system, poetic and vaguely hinted. Going to enjoy the development of the flawed characters, especially the cousin with the limp. Emira's adjustment to freedom should not always be sudden or reliable. We shall see.

Grim, but redemptive.
Revisado: 10-20-24
Lisa always makes difficult topics accessible, like post war economics, or finer points of colonialism. This novel takes on the Inquisition in Lisbon, where a Jewish boy is extracted from Portugal to England by a businessman. He will be trained as a thief taker by a character familiar for other novels. His return to Lisbon to quell his relentless anger is heartbreaking violent and utterly credible. At times the novel was so emotional I had to put it down but I am glad I persisted

Historia
Who is The Horoscope Writer? It’s not Bobby Frindley. He’s an ex-Olympic athlete who has fast-talked his way into an entry-level position at a dying newspaper. He’s supposed to be writing horoscopes, but someone has been doing his job for him . . . On his first night on the job, Bobby receives an email with twelve gruesome, highly detailed horoscopes, along with a chilling ultimatum: print them and one will come true, or ignore them and all of them will.

good yarn running through it, kind of a terramisu of a novel, this was the alcoholic layer...

I don't care much for the sexy bits. I did enjoy the characters and how they developed. I also enjoyed the modern embodiment of virtues, the retelling of an unfamiliar fairytale, if it wasn't invented whole cloth by the author.

Historia
Hetta’s family now knows Wyn’s true identity, but that doesn’t mean they approve of their relationship. Princes are all very well, but Wyn’s not human - though he’s spent 10 years pretending to be. With gossip spreading like wildfire, Hetta and Wyn receive a royal summons. The queen of Prydein has heard the rumors of fae intruders, and she's not letting Wyn go until she's satisfied that he and his people aren’t a threat. Convincing her would be a lot easier if someone wasn’t trying to blacken Wyn’s name and if his sister wasn’t trying to kill him.

From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Looking forward to reading Cast, which I have been academically trained to spell as Caste. And watching the Netflix show about her research process.
