Historia
Activist and abolitionist Frederick Douglass is one of the most famous anti-slavery writers in American history. Following 20 years of enslavement in Maryland, Douglass made a daring bid for freedom in 1838, travelling north via the "underground railroad" before arriving in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where he would settle. It was not long before Douglass took up the cause of black Americans, risking his freedom through writing and lecturing, and travelling the globe to spread his message.

Horrendous narration
Revisado: 03-19-24
It feels like the narrator doesn't read the complete sentence before beginning to narrate it. He sometimes completely mispronounces words so badly that you need to pause to think about what word was written and meant to be said. Early examples include patent to "pay-tent" and fetish to "fay-teesh." Overall, factoring in tone and cadence it might be the worst narration I've ever heard. To be fair, the material seems to be extremely difficult to narrate.

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Historia
The word medieval conjures images of the “Dark Ages”. But the myth of darkness obscures the truth; this was a remarkable period in human history. The Bright Ages recasts the European Middle Ages for what it was, capturing this 1,000-year era in all its complexity and fundamental humanity, bringing to light both its beauty and its horrors. The Bright Ages takes us through 10 centuries and crisscrosses Europe and the Mediterranean, Asia, and Africa, revisiting familiar people and events with new light cast upon them.

Decent history, tortured metaphor
Revisado: 05-31-22
This work contains several meaningful and interesting revisions to popular history. Overall it is a bit of a jumbled mess. The author does not devote effort to forming a chronological nor any other sort of framing mechanism. Somehow the book undoes itself by its breathless repetition of the idea of bright ages and it's incomprehensible overall structure. The age still feel like an opaque disaster.

Charlatanism dictated in an undeservedly smug way

Sloppy science fiction in a violent murderfest
Revisado: 07-07-18
Great narration. This is an OK story with poorly executed science fiction elements. If you like thinking about imagined futures, timelines, paradoxes, and the logical progression of fantastic technologies, then this book will greatly disappoint. These subjects are dealt with sloppily, in an often incoherent and unsatisfying manner. If you want a fairly violent and graphic murderfest-thriller, it's probably up your alley.
