Historia
From the globally best-selling author of Girl with a Pearl Earring. It is 1932, and the losses of the First World War are still keenly felt. Violet Speedwell, mourning for both her fiancé and her brother and regarded by society as a ‘surplus woman’ unlikely to marry, resolves to escape her suffocating mother and strike out alone. A new life awaits her in Winchester. Yes, it is one of draughty boarding-houses and sidelong glances at her naked ring finger from younger colleagues; but it is also a life gleaming with independence and opportunity.

Story is wooden and predictable
Revisado: 10-19-19
I'm so sorry to say that Tracy Chevalier has run out of juice. I won't be buying another of her books. Every plot and sentence of this thing was so predictable I was practically mouthing the words. Beautifully read, however.

Historia
In her latest book, The Universe Has Your Back, New York Times best-selling author Gabrielle Bernstein teaches listeners how to transform their fear into faith in order to live a divinely guided life. Each story and lesson in the book guides listeners to release the blocks to what they most long for: happiness, security, and clear direction. The lessons help listeners relinquish the need to control so they can relax into a sense of certainty and freedom.

I have a lot of tolerance for the weird and woo-woo, but this is truly rubbish.

Historia
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Unloved by Deborah Levy. A group of hedonistic West European tourists gather to celebrate Christmas in a remote French chateau. Then an Englishwoman is brutally murdered, and the sad, eerie child Tatiana declares she knows who did it. The subsequent inquiry into the death proves to be more of an investigation into the nature of love, insatiable rage and sadistic desire. The Unloved offers a bold and revealing look at some of the events that shaped European and African history and the perils of a future founded on concealed truth.

Sally Scott's impossibly annoying accents
Revisado: 04-28-18
Would you try another book from Deborah Levy and/or Sally Scott?
no
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sally Scott?
Someone who doesn't do ludicrously caricaturial accents. Eye am zee poleeceman, Ach nein - every cartoon accent in the shop gets pulled out, and I just can't stand another minute of it. Clearly this woman doesn't actually speak any foreign languages, possibly has never actually listened to what actual French, German or Polish people sound like.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
profound irritation
Any additional comments?
I'd rather hear a robot read this book in monotone, not inflected English.

Historia
Teach Us to Sit Still is the visceral, thought-provoking, and inexplicably entertaining story of how Tim Parks found himself in serious pain, how doctors failed to help, and the quest he took to find his own way out. Overwhelmed by a crippling condition which nobody could explain or relieve, Parks follows a fruitless journey through the conventional medical system only to find relief in the most unexpected place: a breathing exercise that eventually leads him to take up meditation. This was the very last place Parks anticipated finding answers.

Charming but voice is dumb and icky

The story was unexpectedly nice, but this actor is a fool. He played the wry, ironic lines for hur-hur laughs and didn't seem to grasp the meaning of many sentences. A real pity.
