I'm so sorry to say that Tracy Chevalier has run out of juice. I won't be buying another of her books. Every plot and sentence of this thing was so predictable I was practically mouthing the words. Beautifully read, however.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sally Scott?
Someone who doesn't do ludicrously caricaturial accents. Eye am zee poleeceman, Ach nein - every cartoon accent in the shop gets pulled out, and I just can't stand another minute of it. Clearly this woman doesn't actually speak any foreign languages, possibly has never actually listened to what actual French, German or Polish people sound like.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I'd rather hear a robot read this book in monotone, not inflected English.

Teach Us to Sit Still is the visceral, thought-provoking, and inexplicably entertaining story of how Tim Parks found himself in serious pain, how doctors failed to help, and the quest he took to find his own way out. Overwhelmed by a crippling condition which nobody could explain or relieve, Parks follows a fruitless journey through the conventional medical system only to find relief in the most unexpected place: a breathing exercise that eventually leads him to take up meditation. This was the very last place Parks anticipated finding answers.

The story was unexpectedly nice, but this actor is a fool. He played the wry, ironic lines for hur-hur laughs and didn't seem to grasp the meaning of many sentences. A real pity.
