Historia
It is the story of a boy growing up in the war-torn Jerusalem of the 40s and 50s in a small apartment crowded with books in 12 languages and relatives speaking nearly as many. His mother and father, both wonderful people, were ill-suited to each other. When Oz was 12 and a half years old, his mother committed suicide - a tragedy that was to change his life. He leaves the constraints of the family and the community of dreamers, scholars, and failed businessmen to join a kibbutz.

I hated 90% of this book
Revisado: 07-12-23
I read this after a friend raved about it and it makes me wonder if she read a different book than I did. I hated all but the last 90 minutes of this book. I wanted to shake all these pretentious, unreasonable and self-righteous adults in this book even though yes, I know they had hard lives and yes, I know they had horrific childhoods where unthinkable things happened. But none of these experiences seem to have softened them or made them humane towards their own families or appreciate any good times they had. I get it was a different generation who needed to be strong to survive but they just come across as vindictive, neurotic and overbearing. Oz told the same anecdotes over and over, wearing the reader down. I felt the production itself and the narrator was good but in the end the Winesburg Ohio payoff wasn’t worth it to me.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Very Moving Story, Great Narration
Revisado: 08-23-22
I really loved this book and I found it riveting. I don't want to give away any of the story because it's worth listening to with your own ears. I found all of the characters relatable.

Historia
In this groundbreaking biography of the Japanese emperor Hirohito, Herbert P. Bix offers the first complete, unvarnished look at the enigmatic leader whose 63-year reign ushered Japan into the modern world. Never before has the full life of this controversial figure been revealed with such clarity and vividness. Bix describes what it was like to be trained from birth for a lone position at the apex of the nation's political hierarchy and as a revered symbol of divine status.

OK we get it, Bix hates America
Revisado: 10-23-20
I wanted a biography of Hirohito, not a criticism of US presidents Bush, Clinton and Obama for their policies in China and Korea. It's not even vaguely relevant as a preamble. Now listen, does the US have reckoning coming to it in relation to Japan during and after WW2? Sure. BUT WHEN DOES THIS GUY GET TO JAPANESE HISTORY, specifically Hirohito's reign? No clue and I was not going to stick it out. I regret ordering this one and will request my money back.

Are you tired of feeling f*cked up? If you are, Gary John Bishop has the answer. In this straightforward handbook, he gives you the tools and advice you need to demolish the slag weighing you down and become the truly unf--ked version of yourself. "Wake up to the miracle you are," he directs. "Here's what you've forgotten: You're a f--king miracle of being." It isn't other people that are standing in your way; it isn't even your circumstances that are blocking your ability to thrive. It's yourself and the negative self-talk you keep telling yourself.

Revisado: 04-02-19
I'm surprised by all the high ratings on this book and the fact that it was a NYT bestseller. I was looking for something innovative and energizing but this isn't terribly original and within the first hour goes over the same territory multiple times. Yawn.

Hardly a day goes by when nine-year-old Laurent Lepage doesn't cry wolf. From alien invasions to walking trees to winged beasts in the woods to dinosaurs spotted in the village of Three Pines, his tales are so extraordinary no one can possibly believe him. Including Armand and Reine-Marie Gamache, who now live in the little Quebec village.

Least favorite of the series thus far
Revisado: 12-28-18
I don't have much to say here which hasn't been said by other reviewers - don't like the new narrator (maybe Penny could narrate her own now that Cosham has gone? He is sorely missed), story did not grab me and seemed a bit implausible (too many people involved in the building of such a weapon as to not have somebody blab over the years). Depth and feeling seem to be missing on this one - odd considering that Long Way Home and How the Light Gets In were so poignant. I think her personal life was so tough at this point that it was hard for Penny to give us her best.

Historia
A long-buried family secret resurfaces when one of Aloysius Pendergast's most implacable enemies shows up on his doorstep as a murdered corpse. The mystery has all the hallmarks of the perfect murder, save for an enigmatic clue: a piece of turquoise lodged in the stomach of the deceased. The gem leads Pendergast to an abandoned mine on the shore of California's desolate Salton Sea, which in turn propels him on a journey of discovery deep into his family's sinister past.

Probably my least favorite of the series
Revisado: 02-20-17
Would you try another book from Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child and/or Rene Auberjonois?
I'm a fan of the series in general, but this one was repetitive and formulaic.
What could Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Some of the others earlier in the series were really interesting and built up the characters into multi-layered people (The Book of the Dead, Fever Dream) but the new characters introduced in this novel are not dynamic or multi-faceted.
Have you listened to any of Rene Auberjonois’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, he is always fantastic
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
nope

Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Any additional comments?
All three of the narrators were excellent and added to the excitement of the story. I don't even want to say too much about the book itself because you just have to listen to it to appreciate it. Modern tale of intrigue with characters that will stay with you. Would read this author again for sure.

Historia
In A Fatal Winter, Max Tudor - Anglican priest, former MI5 agent, and village heartthrob - investigates two deaths at Chedrow Castle. But his growing attraction to Awena Owen complicates his case, as does the recent arrival at Chedrow Castle of a raucous group of long-lost, greedy relatives, any one of whom has a motive for murder. With a cozy setting, intricate puzzles, and a handsome (non-celibate) priest doing the sleuthing, the books in this series are destined to become instant classics in the mystery world.

Boy, did I call that one wrong!
Revisado: 11-20-14
Where does A Fatal Winter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It was quite good. Very satisfying story, and the narrator's voice is like warm butter. The thing I like about this author is that in the story you can imagine several other plausible solutions, and I fall for those red herrings every time! I totally called this one wrong too just like the last one.
Who was your favorite character and why?
"Father Brown" -- duh. Although I did like the twins quite a bit as well.
What does Michael Page bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His voice is hypnotic. Sometimes I have to re-wind and listen to it again to actually HEAR what he is saying.
Any additional comments?
SPOILER-ish ALERT: OK, I was going in a totally different direction with the motive, I thought for sure that we were going to learn that Milo (the butler) and Lamora were related due to their Russian heritage. But no!

Historia
The death of Lord Edward Crick has unleashed a torrent of gossip through the seedy taverns and elegant ballrooms of Oxfordshire. Few mourn the dissolute young man - except his sister, the beautiful Lady Lydia Farrell. When her husband comes under suspicion of murder, she seeks expert help from Dr. Thomas Silkstone, a young anatomist from Philadelphia. Thomas arrived in England to study under its foremost surgeon, where his unconventional methods only add to his outsider status. Against his better judgment, he agrees to examine Lord Edward’s corpse.

And why is he interested in Lady Lydia?
Revisado: 09-23-14
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The summary of the story -- a period mystery, solved by a New World anatomist, some last minute twists and turns (I did not see the villain coming, the ending was great and unexpected) promises great things, BUT the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Liiiiike what exactly is the appeal of Lady Lydia? Why is he considered an Apprentice when he is already a university lecturer?
