"I'm from the city," Rose said. "I can't be tamed." In this sentence, Kim Turner gets to the heart of what makes this story so gripping, alive with something that matters. Set in a period when fences were beginning to ring in the Old West territories moving toward statehood, when legendary sheriffs and cowboys were feeling the encroachment of civilization on the open land that forms the background of this intense love story. I'm not the listener who gives you a play-by-play of every plot point. I will say that Rose is one of the most likeable heroines I have ever had the pleasure to read in a romance, strong without being obvious about it, with needs in just the right places to be relatable. The ending sneaks up on you, leaving you satisfied but wanting just a little bit more. Let me say a word about the narrator. Dawson McBride was not the right voice for this audiobook, he was the ONLY voice for this audiobook. His rumbling voice shows us the sweep of the landscape, the color of the sky after rain. Three brothers sound different but share common vocal tics as family members do. How a man with a Ron Dunn gravel voice manages to narrate even female dialogue in a way that feels completely natural is out of this world. It's obvious he is a trained actor. All in all, I hope to hear more of the McCabes soon enough.

Let me get this out of the way up front: I enjoyed this story. It's worth your 9+ hours of time, even if you have not listened to or read the first book in the series. It is a pleasant, clean, and exciting story with a premise that never flags. That being said, the author sets his story amid some of the most popular and well known historical stories and settings. So he really needs to take more care to avoid "postcard syndrome." I'm not going to go into a lot of specifics and ruin the story for everyone, but if you are diving in the Titanic and chasing the things the heroes of this story do, you should have a more historical and factual grounding. The set pieces feel a bit shall we say "generic." It's like reading about the Eiffel Tower and not being sure which city the Eiffel Tower is in. Just a postcard picture, so to speak.

Now, gripes aside, Dan Delgado is a revelation as a narrator. He has a particular skill with narrating believable dialogue. Whether it is portraying excitement, terror, boredom, or just the quick cut-and-parry of men in a hurry speaking to each other, he pulls it off marvelously. It's not even that every character sounds different from one another - it's that all of them sound the way they would in my head if I were to read the book. They sound "right." Keep him for future books.

As a hardcore gamer myself, I have been a fan of the litRPG genre since it became a thing. This audiobook is sort of a fast-food version of the litRPG ouvre, but fun and well narrated. The voices were excellent and the story sets up a sequel without leaving you hanging for this one. Good first in a series.

Powerful story, but the real hero is the narrator

This is a tense, terse tale of a gradually growing horror. The horror of discovering a betrayal of love that has gone on for much longer than the heroine has suspected, destroying not only her but everyone else it touches. Pawlish pulls the emotional strings so tight that they almost, but not quite, snap. But the story never passes into the maudlin. The ending is truly satisfying in a way that is unexpected and leaves me wanting revenge. That said, the true hero of this audiobook is the narrator. Jennifer Blom plays the woman scorned, the woman used and abused and craving catharsis, with such quiet power and dignity that I found myself listening to the entire audiobook in only two sessions. Her performance adds to this story, which can't be said of all audiobooks. Her character voices (even male voices) are believable and true. Great, great performance. 5 stars.
