Historia
Two astronomers have detected a strange, pulsing signal from deep space. Within hours, the US government goes into lockdown, restricting airspace and scrubbing scientific data. Was the signal an intercepted communication revealing alarming plans for an enemy’s military strike? Or has humanity at long last found proof of extraterrestrial life?

Such a versatile writer, and Scalzi’s narrator here was just as good as the material. I completely enjoyed it.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Finished it.
Revisado: 06-30-21
Disappointing, this. Just not very surprising or engaging. Not sure why I finished listening. I'm also not sure I paid much attentions, so more detailed, attentive reviews may be more useful. I simply could not attend to it, if that makes sense. Usually audio books pull me in.

Transporting
Revisado: 03-11-21
If you wish to escape your time and place, maybe yourself, try this other very real elsewhere. I guess I’m writing that to other westerners.
If you loved A Suitable Boy, or A Fine Balance, or even A House For Mr Biswas, you will appreciate this book.
I won’t summarize.

Human story
Revisado: 02-18-20
I love this novel. I wish I were better at writing down why.
It's perfect for listening, intricate but with an overall clarity which makes all the rich detail a dark foliage. (I want to start listening again.)
It's about transport, in a way, and it does that, describing places and times and following a few strong, imperfect characters. These are the kind of characters who unknowingly and secretly shape the world beneath the notice of large powers, or knowingly and secretly despite the notice of large powers. But only in fine strands between the giant impersonal idiot waves of those large powers. (You know the ones.)
The performance is excellent mostly. There are a very few false shifts and accents in the thirteen hours.

I was a surprised that I enjoyed this book, looking forward to getting back to it each afternoon. It was only as I began the second book that I realized that these remind me of Kafka. Of Saramago. Unlike the science fiction I usually try to find, these books are focus on the psychological impacts of emerging totalitarian societies. Maybe.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

A useful read in these difficult days
Revisado: 08-06-18
I kept putting this book off. I knew I should read it. Thank god for Audible and for an author willing to read his own work - a perfect combination for a necessary read. I found the book engaging throughout and the perspective it described one I hadn't been exposed to elsewhere.
I'd recommend Hillbilly Elegy to anyone who finds it baffling that working class citizens vote for an over-the-top wealthy, cynical elite.
I confess that I still don't understand, but that doesn't make this book a failure. We are, after all, complicated and contradictory; there are no easy answers. This book offered me an intimate look at one subculture contributing to the complexity. I look forward to hearing more from this young writer.

Hard to explain this rating
Revisado: 09-24-17
I'd read something like this review before, but I started listening and was pleased. I'd misunderstood the misgivings of others as objections to the first narrator as she switched voices between characters. I thought she did quite well. The story engaged me, the characters had my interest. Then the other story section of this novel began with a new narrator. Oh -- that's what they didn't like.
It really is hard to explain why I'm not sure I can finish this book. It's as though this narrator has always enjoyed reading aloud, has always done it well, and so approached this reading with no knowledge of the story or characters, confident she could wing it. Her enunciation clear and strong, her voice pleasant, she simply seems to have no idea about or interest in what she's reading. Each emphasis the wrong emphasis --- or not even that -- every other emphasis the precisely the wrong emphasis. Every other pause in the wrong place. I listened for some time figuring she'd understand it wasn't working and either catch on about the story and get better or stop, read ahead and get better, or something. I can perhaps puzzle out what these characters are supposed to be like and where the story is going, but this is a surprisingly awful listening experience.
On the up side, this really does remind me how much value is added by a skillful narrator.
You'll see now that the rating system provided offers no easy way to reflect this situation. Although it seems unfair to the author and the first narrator to go low, perhaps alerting the production company could result in an updated audiobook with a different second narrator? Please?
