Emotions for Dummys
Revisado: 01-14-19
I quit after 6 chapters because the book was too simplistic for me. If you have heard about emotions, but don't know what they are this might be the perfect introductory book for you. Starting with the definition from the Websters dictionary and moving on to the helpful distinction between good and bad emotions this book with it's dry as dust, analytical, dispassionate tone is perfectly rendered by the narrator. If you are concerned that this book may contain outrageous emotional content like a sense of humor or compassion I can reassure you that, in spite of its title, it will not disturb you by touching your heart. All of the content is completely scientific and rational. The simplistic examples may also be very helpful to some... Getting a gun and shooting a lot of people is an example of Bad emotional intelligence and taking a few deep breaths and deciding against a mass murder is good emotional intelligence. Sorry about the sarcasm, this book was not a good fit for me.

I just can't listen to one more page
Revisado: 05-20-17
At chapter 30 of 89 I got to the point where I just could not listen to the main character smoking one more cigarette or drinking one more shot of whiskey. A gritty setting is fine, but so far this is all I've gotten. Time to return this one.

I found the journal at work. Well, I don't know if you'd call it work, but that's where I found it. It's the lost journal of Nikola Tesla, one of the greatest inventors and visionaries ever. Before he died in 1943, he kept a notebook filled with spectacular claims and outrageous plans.

The Best Telling of Ursula LeGuin
Revisado: 03-15-15
I have read this book twice before and loved it. Gabra Zackman had the perfect voice, cadence, and pace for narration so it was great to listen to The Telling for a change. Other reviewers may have their take on this book, but from my perspective it manages to say much about the value of traditional cultures which can be missed in the rush to modernize. LeGuinn lays out this global and historical conflict with such a sparse economy of words, even handedness, and deeply human poetry that it takes my breath away.
I love the ending. I grabbed my book after listening to the end and re-read it twice. It made me cry again and again.

Historia
Nowhere is Mozart's maturity and mastery more apparent than in the chamber music he wrote during the last 10 years of his life. These 16 lectures take you deep inside the structure of Mozart's chamber masterworks to reveal his hand at work. This is an amazing opportunity to hear, study, and enjoy a selection of immortal musical compositions that Professor Greenberg calls "a blessing of inconceivable richness". You will learn the basic "language" that all 18th-century composers used to write Classical music. You'll also explore the subtleties of Mozart's technique as a composer: his ability to make art "artless".

Any additional comments?
I'm near the end of my second time through and still learning more. Robert Greenburg has increased my understanding and enjoyment of Mozart, chamber music, and all the (good) music I listen to. Robert's lectures are great and the balance between listing to Mozart's chamber music and his comments is perfect.
Note: Don't be surprised if you have to buy: Mozart:The Guarneri Quartet plays String Quartets and Quintets while or at least after you are listen to this set of lectures.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Any additional comments?
The setting, character development, human insights, and narrator all made this book a wonderful listen. There was a gentle, penetrating quality which made this book particularly enjoyable after listing to other fantasy novels which contained a lot of violence. A remarkable first novel.

Don't start the Foundation series with this one
Revisado: 12-01-12
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A more interesting story line. This book relies on the fame of the foundation series and has no story line of it's own.
What was most disappointing about Isaac Asimov’s story?
Because there is very little story development this book relies on bickering between characters and forced action scenes to keep going. If you love the Foundation series so much you absolutely have to have more, go ahead and read this book, otherwise skip it. The most disappointing thing for me was that I remember enjoying the Foundation Trilogy and this did not compare.

Revisado: 06-19-11
An excellent, excellent story and well narrated with a convincing Martian accent. All the action takes place on earth but it still reaches deep into intergalactic time and space. I found myself looking for excuses to sneak off every moment I had a chance to listen to it. It carries you all the way to it's well conceived end.

In this Hugo-nominated novel, Neanderthal physicist Ponter Boddit brings Canadian geneticist Mary Vaughan back to his world to explore the near-utopian civilization of the Neanderthals. Boddit serves as a Candide figure, the naive visitor whose ignorance about our society makes him a perfect tool to analyze human tendencies toward violence, over-population, and environmental degradation.

Runs Out of Steam
Revisado: 11-26-10
Book one was entertaining but, book two mostly drags on with a tiresome exploration of religion and sentimenal reasons to believe in life after death. It is true that huntergatherers had lots of time on their hands but, the author is unable to convince me that they had any incentive to develop an iorn age or advanced technologies. I'm stopping at book 2 after reading the reviews by other readers.

Centuries from now, the basic right to expand human intelligence beyond its natural limits has become a war-worthy cause for the Demarchists and Conjoiners. Only vast lighthugger starships bind these squabbling colonies together, manned by the panicky and paranoid Ultras. And the hyperpigs just try to keep their heads down. The rich get richer. And everyone tries not to think about the worrying number of extinct alien civilizations turning up on the outer reaches of settled space...because who's to say that humanity won't be next?

If you like to travel far in time and space you will like these stories. The hive mind concept and humanities reaction to it are intriguingly expored in a hard SF envoirnment with space pirates and interstellar travel.
The narator gives you no warning of the end of one story and the beginning of the next. Don't get lost during these transitions.
