Where does A Bridge Too Far rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

At the top of this genre.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Field Marshall Montgomery was my "favorite" character, but not in a good way. Montgomery's arrogance, pettiness, selfishness, and indecisiveness could not have been portrayed more forcefully.

Have you listened to any of Clive Chafer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I am not sure I have heard any other of his performances, but he did quite well here. I did find his voice to be a bit thin and reedy at times.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A Bridge Too Far. This of course became one of the greatest war movies and portrayals of the travails faced by men in battle ever made.

Any additional comments?

This is truly a masterpiece. The research and documentation used to create the gripping story line is remarkable in its scope.

What made the experience of listening to Against All Enemies the most enjoyable?

The imagination of threat plots in this series is always breathtaking. The thought of the combination of the Taliban using the drug cartels' access to smuggle terrorist into America is chilling. As always, there is plenty of well written action in a tight storyline.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Against All Enemies?

Without spoiling the story, the airport segments were mesmerizing and terrifying.

What about Steven Weber’s performance did you like?

The narrator does an excellent job of presenting a vast cast of characters so that they are individually recognizable.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

"Moved" is the wrong word for a Clancey novel. There are any number of suspenseful " Oh #@&%, how are they going to stop that?" moments.

Any additional comments?

This is one of the best books in the Clancey series in a while.

What did you love best about Echo Burning?

That it was a Jack Reacher novel. I am a big fan of the entire series.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

There were way too many slow segments during the the character and plot development. At the end of the day, it was a a pretty good story, but it took way too long to get there. This would have been better as a well edited novella.

What about Dick Hill’s performance did you like?

Dick Hall is perfect for the Jack Reacher stories, even when "Reacher said nothing".

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, unless I had known which segments to skip.

Any additional comments?

Not his best, but I'll keep on reading.

Where does Dead Wake rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Near the top of its genre.

What other book might you compare Dead Wake to and why?

The Rising Sun; Lincoln, A Team of Rivals; Rise and Fall of the Third Reich

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

While favorite might not be the right word, I thought the portrayal of Captain Turner brought the character to life with great depth. Woodrow Wilson's portrayal was far less than flattering.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

First, why any passenger would willingly have gotten on that ship knowing what they knew at the time it departed is beyond me. Second, the diversity of the reaction of the passengers to the torpedoing and sinking was fascinating.

Any additional comments?

I am not sure I believe the storyline that the British Admiralty routed the ship directly into the path of a known U-boat in hopes it would be sunk in order to bring the US into the war. It certainly makes for interesting conjecture, and shines a different light on Churchill if true.

If you could sum up True Detective in three words, what would they be?

Disbelief Willingly Suspended

Would you recommend True Detective to your friends? Why or why not?

I would. It is a nice piece of period fluff. The characters are entertaining, but not very believable.

What three words best describe Dan John Miller’s performance?

Fine for the material he was reading.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Detective for the Mob.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Without question! This book takes you inside the workings of the cartels as well as drug enforcement. It educates you about the interworkings, while at the same time keeping you enthralled with multiple plots and plenty of action. There is never a dull moment.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

See above.

Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not, but certainly will in the future. He was excellent for this book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

It was not so much as a particular moment, but the most vivid impression was the wealth and power of the cartels and the loyalty and ruthlessness of their members.

Any additional comments?

Excellent, enlightening read!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. This book has a ridiculous, totally unbelievable story line.

What other book might you compare Those Who Wish Me Dead to and why?

The best comparison is to the old 10 cent bulk adventure novels that were thrown together with no believable plot. or characters.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The narrator's portrayal of the boy and most of the women was so whiny that it made you wish the bad guys would shoot them (or better yet, the narrator).

Could you see Those Who Wish Me Dead being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

The area where the action took place is truly spectacular, so I could see it as a great backdrop for a made for TV movie with a B List cast of fit young actors and actresses as window dressing for the scenery.

Any additional comments?

I never fail to finish a book once I start it. I almost didn't finish this one.

Where does Truman rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Truman was one of the most interesting and informative audiobooks I have ever heard.

What other book might you compare Truman to and why?

Lincoln, Team of Rivals and The Bully Pulpit.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scenes were Truman just being Truman in the White House. Whether it was Truman deciding to drop the bombs, facing down the Soviets and preventing what was likely to be a shooting war, deciding that the Marshall Plan was crucial to prevent western Europe from being taken over by the communists, or dealing with the vile Repulicans in Congress, Truman was an every day, common sense man who did what he thought was right for the people.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My strongest reaction was to the number of crucial decisions that shaped modern life Truman made - correctly.

The Light Tended to Go Elsewhere

Revisado: 11-23-15

What did you like best about Where All Light Tends to Go? What did you like least?

The prose in the story was excellent. I actually saw and felt the scene and mood the author was trying to convey. On the other side, the characters were all too one dimensional. I grew up in this area, and yes, I went east for college and to live (although I did acquire a mountain summer house later in life, proving you can take the boy out of the mountains, but you can't take the mountains out of the boy).
Mountain life can be hardscrabble. Although there is a great deal of poverty and an under-educated populace, the people tend to be proud, strong and honest. They have no similarity to the main characters in this book who would be more appropriately located in a big city getto with a different accent. Most of the characters were so dark, without any saving graces that they were not believable.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I don't comment on endings because I don't like spoilers.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Although the mountain drawl in this area is thick, the narrator was clearly "not from round chere", and he spread it on much too thick. Despite this, the prose and imagery were excellent.

Was Where All Light Tends to Go worth the listening time?

His accent was over the top and unauthentic, although if you were not from the area, you might not notice.

What made the experience of listening to A Feast for Crows the most enjoyable?

A return to the Seven Kingdoms is always a pleasurable experience. I must say there were not as many enthralling storylines in Book 4 as in the previous books, and it dragged occasionally.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Book 4 is not replete with my favorite characters. Most of the characters in Book 4 are flawed villains who deserve killing and of course get their just deserts.

What about Roy Dotrice’s performance did you like?

The narrator of this series is simply masterful. He distinguishes between a multitude of characters flawlessly while at the same time adding depth and development.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Actually, if I were making a film of the entire saga, much of this Book 4 would likely be left on the cutting room floor.

Any additional comments?

I am looking forward to Book 5.
