Historia
In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: The North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever." The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship.

Staggering!
Revisado: 08-26-22
The author covers all the bases in this unbelievable story of exploration and stunning suffering. I have read other polar exploration books but this one was on a new topic; a US sanctioned attempt at the North Pole. This is the 1870’s, so the near modern era. What they didn’t know and what they attempted to do was astonishing. Many attempts had been made by various countries and explorers with no success. Then comes this well funded and government sanctioned voyage. If you like adventure stories like The River of Doubt or K2 you will like this panoramic analysis of the times and the men and institutions that found the incredibly dangerous North Pole compelling.

Historia
Prickly, wry, resistant to change yet ruthlessly honest and deeply empathetic, Olive Kitteridge is “a compelling life force” (San Francisco Chronicle). The New Yorker has said that Elizabeth Strout “animates the ordinary with an astonishing force”, and she has never done so more clearly than in this book, where the iconic Olive struggles to understand not only herself and her own life but the lives of those around her in the town of Crosby, Maine.

Historia
This is the concluding volume of the history of the IV SS-Panzerkorps, a relatively unknown organization that was born in battle during the last year of the war and fought exclusively on the Eastern Front. After their successful defense of Warsaw and the Vistula Front during the fall of 1944, the corps and its two famous Waffen-SS divisions, the Totenkopf and Wiking, as well as several divisions of the German Army, were sent south to reverse the military situation on the Hungarian Front.

Incredible Detail
Revisado: 05-17-22
I knew almost nothing of the Budapest relief effort but now have a detailed understanding due to the incredible detailed account and analysis of this huge operation. I was under the impression that the German armies were totally falling apart in 1945, but this account shows how effective they could still be against an enemy superior in virtually all combat measures. If you like a detailed day by day battle analysis then you will probably find this account of interest to see how one of the final large battles of WWII developed.

Historia
It is late 1862, and the United States has been ripped apart by civil war for over a year with no end in sight. The war is a distant thought to Johannes Wolf, a young German immigrant with a crippled leg keeping him off the muster lists. Desperately dredging the gutters for recruits, Wolf cons his way into the depleted, demoralized, and poorly run Union army, and is promptly placed in the undesirable F Company of the 13th Michigan Cavalry.

Surprisingly good action listen
Revisado: 12-02-21
Don’t normally give a 5 but I found myself highly interested in the the story of protecting the Union rear at Gettysburg, and the details of the fighting. Good action descriptions and I found myself eager to get back to the book. Historically informative.

Historia
In the past two decades, our understanding of the navigational and physiological feats that enable birds to cross immense oceans, fly above the highest mountains, or remain in unbroken flight for months at a stretch has exploded. What we've learned of these key migrations is nothing short of extraordinary. This breathtaking work of nature writing also introduces listeners to those scientists, researchers, and bird lovers trying to preserve global migratory patterns in the face of climate change and other environmental challenges.

Historia
When Elwood Curtis, a black boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, he finds himself trapped in a grotesque chamber of horrors. Elwood’s only salvation is his friendship with fellow “delinquent” Turner, which deepens despite Turner’s conviction that Elwood is hopelessly naive, that the world is crooked, and that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble.

Historia
The Persian King Artaxerxes rules an empire stretching from the Aegean to Northern India. As many as 50 million people are his subjects. His rule is absolute. Yet battles can be won - or lost - with a single blow. Princes fall. And when the dust of civil war settles, the Spartans are left stranded in the heart of an enemy's empire, without support, without food, and without water. Far from home, surrounded by foes, it falls to the young soldier Xenophon to lead the survivors against Artaxerxes' legendary Persian warriors.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Revisado: 05-20-20
When the troubles of the day seem serious, after reading this, you will know they are not. It seems impossible that Shackleton’s crew made it. In fact it was impossible. But they did. The explorers of that era were tougher than nails. An epic journey of survival under the most difficult circumstances imaginable.

Best on drinking
Revisado: 01-30-20
Having been a drinker (not a hard core alcoholic) and having had all the issues all drinkers have had through the decades, I found this book the best in discussing the topic from someone who has had all the hangovers and regrets many of us have had. It’s worth listening to even if you don’t have a drinking problem in order to consider the culture of drinking and how it creeps up to steal time and in many cases make idiots of us.

What an illuminating look into Roosevelt and the Amazon of that time. The author gives a full picture of the personalities, the politics and the environment. And man alive, the environment in the unexplored Amazon was as far away as the moon and way more dangerous.
