Texting while driving. Binge drinking. Bullying. Unprotected sex. There are plenty of reasons for parents to worry about getting a late-night call about their teen. But most of the advice parents and educators hear about teens is outdated and unscientific - and simply doesn't work. Acclaimed adolescent psychiatrist and educator Jess Shatkin brings more than two decades' worth of research and clinical experience to the subject, along with cutting-edge findings from brain science, evolutionary psychology, and other disciplines.

This Mother and Health Teacher is Wild About This Book
Revisado: 07-18-19
The science is up-to-date and absolutely relevant. But what makes this book so fabulous is the artful way thatJess Shatkin explains things. The information is eye-opening, easy to understand, and the stories truly enhance the major points. I find the brain development information to be so interesting, and the tips that are shared are very practical for anyone who cares for teens. I like the fact that Jess narrated this himself- I think that lends to the authenticity of the piece. I’ve already listened to it twice, and I would like to listen to several sections again- WITH my teen/tween daughters so they have better insight about motivations and behaviors that involve risk.

Historia
Dr. Lisa M. Shulman, a neurologist, describes a personal story of loss and her journey to understand the science behind the mind-altering experience of grief. Part memoir, part creative nonfiction, part account of scientific discovery, this moving book combines Shulman's perspectives as an expert in brain science and a keen observer of behavior with her experience as a clinician, a caregiver, and a widow.

A touching story, with just the right balance of personal insight and scientific theory.

I truly enjoyed listening to Dr. Shulman’s book on Audible. The story of the author’s journey was beautifully written, and artfully read by the narrator. I was inspired by the way Dr. Shulman and her late husband thoughtfully cared for each other until the end. I felt privileged to hear the intimate details of their story. The analysis of the emotional, social and physical changes one goes through in life after loss was also very interesting. The author describes many of her feelings and experiences with grief, and then pairs them with sound scientific explanations. I am glad I read this book, and I am certain that I’ll circle back to it for comfort and guidance in the future.
