fun, but been done
Revisado: 02-08-23
The villain is never really developed and the motive isn’t quite clear. The ending is too fast in my opinion, I wish it would’ve been fleshed out more. The main character is very likable in my opinion. I also would’ve loved to have more character development for all of the supporting characters. Pretty predictable but still fun!

Historia
Darby Thorne is a college student stranded by a blizzard at a highway rest stop in the middle of nowhere. She’s on the way home to see her sick mother. She’ll have to spend the night in the rest stop with four complete strangers. Then she stumbles across a little girl locked inside one of their parked cars. There is no cell phone reception, no telephone, no way out because of the snow, and she doesn’t know which one of the other travelers is the kidnapper.

ending is so stupid haha, like actually bewilderingly stupid. This author wants to be a mastermind writer so badly, but all of his “twists” are either predictable or bad. The book features multiple slurs which in my opinion, were unnecessary, I understand that they are trying to portray what kind of person this character is but, could’ve been done in a better way. The pov is kind of weird as it is a third person narration, but at some points we’re in Darbys mind and other times we are focused on other characters whiteout a clear shift. It is a very blurry narration. The audio narrator was great. The story it self could’ve been much better, it feels like the author wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with it until the end. It’s also clear the other doesn’t have experience with certain things he portrays, such as siblings calling each other “little bro” and saying there’s a cheesecake factory in provo, utah (there’s not). The child in this book seems way too mature for her stated age, however this is just me nitpicking.

Thrilling Mystery Full of Surprises
Revisado: 01-19-23
This is my first Karin Slaughter novel, and she has won me over as a reader/listener. I usually don’t like mysteries because I find them too predictable but this novel has so many twists and turns. It gives you some predictably to keep you hooked while shocking you with more and more news. This books does require HEAVY trigger warnings for SA, I also suggest looking into the other trigger warnings for this novel but I don’t want to risk spoiling by listing them here. I will mention that if you are sensitive to EDs there is a quite a bit of fat shaming in this book, so read at your own risk. There are pieces of this book that will leave you with your mouth dropped open out of shock and disgust. I really enjoyed this novel and would recommend it to anyone who is into true crime, grit, thriller, or a strong female lead who is not a mary sue. The narrator is great and very easy to listen to!

The Narrator was Great! Everything else…idk
Revisado: 01-17-23
This book was hard to get through, not because it was morbid or difficult to follow, simply because it was so redundant. The author treats the reader as if they are dumb and really pounds the “message” into the readers head. The message is very surface level and the ideas behind it aren’t developed much. The book feels very repetitive with the main character giving basically the same monologue over and over again. There are also a lot of things that aren’t explained or shown surrounding the world building which lead to some plot holes. This whole book seemed very surface level and is not very descriptive. The main character is likable but underdeveloped, I think the author did do a good job portraying the loneliness feeling through the main characters monologues.
Overall, I didn’t hate it, however it felt like it was trying to be deep and thought provoking while not leaving anything up to the audience to actually think about. I don’t know much about the author, however this novel feels like it came from lack of experience rather than lack of talent. The ideas are there, just severely lacking in development and craft. I think the narrator was magnificent it felt like a performance rather just someone reading to me.
