Historia
The Man Who Laughs (“L’Homme qui Rit”) was called by its author “A Romance of English History,” and was written during the period Hugo spent in exile in Guernsey. Like The Toilers of the Sea, its immediate predecessor, the main theme of the story is human heroism, confronted with the superhuman tyranny of blind chance. As a passionate cry on behalf of the tortured and deformed, and the despised and oppressed of the world, The Man Who Laughs is irresistible.

Beautiful Book. Sad ending :(
Revisado: 09-01-24
It’s Hugo, everything he writes is beautiful. This is no exception. It’s no Les Miserables, but it’s still a really good story.

Historia
Raskolnikov, a destitute and desperate former student, wanders through the slums of St Petersburg and commits a random murder without remorse or regret. He imagines himself to be a great man, a Napoleon: acting for a higher purpose beyond conventional moral law. But as he embarks on a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a suspicious police investigator, Raskolnikov is pursued by the growing voice of his conscience and finds the noose of his own guilt tightening around his neck. Only Sonya, a downtrodden sex worker, can offer the chance of redemption.

Historia
Enthralled by his own exquisite portrait, Dorian Gray exchanges his soul for eternal youth and beauty. Influenced by his friend Lord Henry Wotton, he is drawn into a corrupt double life; indulging his desires in secret while remaining a gentleman in the eyes of polite society. Only his portrait bears the traces of his decadence. The novel was a succès de scandale, and the book was later used as evidence against Wilde at the Old Bailey in 1895. It has lost none of its power to fascinate and disturb.

One of the better books I’ve listened to. Great story with good narration. Was recommended this one by a high schooler, I told her I’d give it a listen. Saw her next day and thanked her for leading me to such a great book.

Just imagine if everyone listened/read this book.
Revisado: 02-03-23
Wow what a great book. It’s super accessible that a child could read but it’s packed full of great advice and information that I know many people in old age that could use this book bad.
If everyone picked up this audiobook, just think about how much easier it would be to communicate with each other? Life would go so much smoother and people would be so much healthier emotionally.
The book is super easy to digest. Most chapters come with an anecdote that relates to the chapter, then an interpretation of anecdote, then some great advice from Robert Greene on the chapter.
It is general advice there is nothing complicated, it’s just straightforward good advice on how to deal with others and analyze yourself to become a better all around person, and will better equip you to deal with the problems everyone will face in life.
This book is obviously not going to fix you, but it will just bring some obvious issues to light and drop some great knowledge on you. You will learn something from it. I would recommend everyone read.

most accessible dostoevsky book.
Revisado: 01-04-22
Great book. if your looking for an accessible book by dostoevsky that you can casually listen to and enjoy this is it. probably the best place to start with dostoevsky is here. I don't reccomend very many dostoevsky audiobooks because it's just so pointless to even try listening to these books unless you are familiar with the text beforehand, but this one is different and can be thoroughly enjoyed while driving down the road. highly recommend. great narrator also.

Wow what a helpful audiobook!
Revisado: 01-04-22
These smartpass audiobooks are great introductions to these rather inaccessible plays. it takes a highly inaccessible play and walks you through line by line and translates it for you. you then can rewind and re listen, and you will be blown away that you can actually understand what the line just said. these books are a dream for any beginner that just wants to open up these plays a little bit to themselves so they can enjoy them. well worth the credit, I've done a few of them so far and plan on buying all of them eventually. would love to see more plays from Shakespeare and maybe other writers as well.

Historia
The murder of brutal landowner Fyodor Karamazov changes the lives of his sons irrevocably: Mitya, the sensualist, whose bitter rivalry with his father immediately places him under suspicion for parricide; Ivan, the intellectual, driven to breakdown; the spiritual Alyosha, who tries to heal the family's rifts; and the shadowy figure of their bastard half-brother, Smerdyakov. Dostoyevsky's dark masterwork evokes a world where the lines between innocence and corruption, good and evil, blur and everyone's faith in humanity is tested.

Maxims for growing up.
Revisado: 05-10-21
This is actually one of those books I highly recommend listening to instead of reading, this book is one of the rare ones where the author 10x's the books experience reading it and he does an awesome job with it.
The book is a little cliche and common sense but Dr. Peterson does a really really good job at expressing them. He has a commanding voice and he hammers home his points hard enough that you will have a hard time disagreeing with him. He's a natural father figure, and a lot of guys need that.
I tacked a star off because it seems a little long. Also, it seemed like it devolved into political ranting at times, which was annoying, but a small part of the book.
All in all it was an interesting book that hammers down some uncomfortable truths to the reader, would recommend this self help book to anyone.
