Trying not to fall in love can be…challenging. One might think that, as an ER nurse, I live a full and exciting life. If you think this, you are sadly mistaken. I’m pretty sure there's hardly a soul more boring than me. Ask my best friend, she’ll agree. Which is why she's come up with a 30-day plan to transform me from boring Lucy to, well…the real Lucy. The Lucy before the accident. Each day, I have to complete some ridiculous challenge, usually involving something embarrassing or new. That includes getting my coworker, Dr. Graham Shackwell, involved.

Really fun book
Revisado: 08-06-24
I liked most everything about this book. I didn’t like the male reader at first but by the end I did like him. It’s just a really fun, cute, fast paced book. There are absolutely laugh out loud moments (a few times while listening during physical therapy I laughed out loud and got a funny look or two.

Young Eddie Russett has no ambition to be anything other than a loyal drone of the Collective. With his better-than-average red perception, he could well marry Constance Oxblood and inherit the string works; he may even have enough red perception to make prefect. For Eddie, life looks colorful. Life looks good. But everything changes when he moves with his father, a respected swatchman, to East Carmine. There, he falls in love with a Grey named Jane who opens his eyes to the painful truth behind his seemingly perfect, rigidly controlled society.

Just an unbelievably clever book
Revisado: 05-10-24
It’s my second time listening to this book. I can’t remember listening to/reading a book I’ve like better in at least 15 or 20 years.
I can separate my enjoyment of a book from an objective standpoint. I can’t say it’s one of the best I’ve read but it’s absolutely one of my favorites.
I am thrilled my next read will be book two in this series . . . I’ve been waiting for a LONG time to read more about the amazing world the author has created.
If you like light sci-fi in a slightly dystopian setting with a truly unique setting this book is absolutely a must read.

A collection of humorous insights into important topics ranging from being targeted by annoying ads ("Nowhere to Hide"), to resorting to symbols when you've forgotten your words ("At a Loss for Words"), to figuring out what door that extra key opens ("My Extra Key"). Other essays examine how sitting is the new smoking (whatever that means) and why it is just so hard to focus when you have the attention span of a gnat.

I really enjoy Barbara’s essays. They are just so much fun. I feel like getting too specific about what I liked would give away minor spoilers which I hate doing.
They are fun, cute and funny. They are well worth reading. Just buy them and enjoy!

Really funny book. Extremely enjoyable
Revisado: 02-15-24
I was given a free copy of this as an audio book in exchange for a fair review.
This was really enjoyable. I was absolutely laughing out loud at many of these essays. Some were a bit more poignant. I really enjoyed all of them. My favorite was the one about kitchen gadgets. As a self proclaimed kitchen gadget man it felt like Barbara had access to my kitchen and had been poking around. I was laughing uncontrollably at times!
The audio production was very good. The reader did an excellent job.
Lots of good everyday observational kind of humor in these. I think there is at least a little something for everyone. I would highly recommend this. It was just a really fun read/listen. If you are considering this just get yourself a copy it’s well worth listening to!

Just a fun cute story with grammar lessons thrown in.
Revisado: 02-15-24
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.
I’ve got to admit this was not my kind of book. But it was still enjoyable. I would have never picked this out by myself.
But it’s a really cute story. I’m not sure who the target demographic is but I’d absolutely recommend this to teenaged students. Reading and rereading a book like this is a great way to learn how to avoid common pitfalls.
If one is reading this for knowledge I’d recommend an ebook or physical copy. I understood most of this book prior to listening so I got some of the subtle things in this book (like homophones) but someone unfamiliar with things like that might miss some meaning listening instead of reading.
However if you (like me) are just looking for a cute fun read that just happens to be grammar based the audio book is great. The reader did a great job and it was absolutely entertaining listening to this.
There are some super creative bits in this novella that must have taken a HUGE effort to write (like the rhyming bits). I can’t imagine how long it must have taken to come up with all of that. It was truly impressive.
This seems to me like a book that despite its short length likely took as long to write as a several hundred page novel (or maybe that is just my bias thinking this was a huge effort to write?). Seriously impressive to me!
It’s well worth reading if you are a grammar person and or you just want a good quick read that might teach you something.

Worst book in the series
Revisado: 12-30-23
The subject matter is difficult to read. I’ve read other books that deal with similar subject matter that did a far better job. The kind of dual time line thing I think has been done to death even when well executed and this was NOT well executed. It was very hard to keep the timelines straight. I find that with dual time line books it’s best to have multiple voice actors or a single voice actor who does multiple voices.
I read this series because I like detective lead mysteries and National Parks. There is virtually no National Park content in this book.
For me this book is 100% skipable and I’m a diehard completionist.
I understand wanting to shine a light on the subject matter I really do. I just think this book doesn’t do it in a good entertaining way.
I read books for entertainment this just was not entertaining. I hope the next book in the series goes back to the status quo.

"Nagging just sounds so negative, and I am not a negative person. Truth is, I'm the kind of person you'd ask for directions if you were lost, or tell your life story to while waiting in line at the grocery store, which has happened on more than one occasion, believe me." Sure, Ella Boudreaux is great at nagging - in fact, she's the best - but where has it gotten her? Nowhere, that's where.

I rarely give a book 5 out of 5 stars. This was absolutely deserving. It’s hilariously funny and very cute.
The audio performance was excellent. Just flawless. A great short story with a great audio performance. What else can one ask for?
I love the ending I was laughing and crying and just happy. It’s just a really good short story. I’m so glad to have had the opportunity to have listened to it. It’s absolutely one of the best things I’ve read in a long time.

Revisado: 12-19-22
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is book 6 in the series. I’ve really enjoyed all of them. This was the first one I listened to rather than read. The reader was good and the audio production was good also.
This series is in essence a cozy mystery/reluctant detective story with a couple of twists. The first twist is location related. Cozy mysteries often take place in cold snowy often rural locations. This takes place in a suburb of Miami. The other twist is that the main character (or reluctant detective) is usually someone who is under employed or who works in some kind of service related industry (runs a bakery, librarian, homemaker . . . things like that). The main character in these is a lawyer.
These two twists are a lot of what I love about the series. They are just different than the typical cozy mystery. I like Florida books (Carl Hiaasen and Tim Dorsey for example) . . . I love the crazy Florida characters that appear in the “typical”
Florida book. While those characters are not the focal point of these novels . . . they do appear.
These are typical cozy mysteries in most other ways. If you like cozy mysteries but you want something a little different than the scores of others this series is just wonderful.
This book is pretty typical of the series. It didn’t really stick out in any way (I think that is a good thing). Of course the plot is different and there are new characters but it’s just a typical book in a series that I really enjoy.
I love books that are a little different but are good stories well told. These books tend to be on the shorter side but unlike other series that I have read they still feel complete even though they are short. I have a relatively new found respect for authors who can write shorter books that feel complete. I think it is far more difficult than it seems. The nice thing about shorter books is that the pacing feels really fast which I love . . . I really dislike most slow paced books. These feel really quick.
In short I really like this series in general and this book in particular. If you like a good cozy mystery give these a go they are really good reading!

Very fun short book of very short stories
Revisado: 12-05-22
I was given a copy of this audio book for free in exchange for an honest review.
I generally listen to audio books while I am doing other things (usually walking my dog). Since I was asked to write a review I wanted to make sure my mind did not wander and I missed something . . . so I listened to this twice. At a little under 2 hours this was easy to accomplish. Honestly due to the nature of these very short stories that probably wasn’t necessary. But I enjoyed them the second time as much as if not more than the first.
I generally don’t like shorter stories and essays but these were the exception to that rule. These were often very ironic stories/essays/whatever you want to call them. Some were more poignant than others but most were still funny.
There is little overlap between the stories (nothing at all obvious) but sometimes you get the feeling that the stories are somehow related in a way you just can’t put your finger on. I don’t know if that is because I’ve recently read through a few novels set in Florida that had a few vaguely similar stories in them or it was just my overactive imagination. The bottom line is that these were very enjoyable very short stories.
As far as the audio production value this was very good. Far better than I expected to be honest. I’ve absolutely listened to novels on the best sellers list that had worse readers/performances.
If you are looking for a quick read/listen give this a shot it’s quite enjoyable and it’s absolutely worth reading or listening to more than once.
