By age twenty-four, Letty Davenport has seen more action and uncovered more secrets than many law enforcement professionals. Now a recent Stanford grad with a master’s in economics, she’s restless and bored in a desk job for U.S. Senator Colles. Letty’s ready to quit, but her skills have impressed Colles, and he offers her a carrot: feet-on-the-ground investigative work, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security.

Not bad but...
Revisado: 10-11-23
This is the usual Jack Ryan Jr story, but it is excruciatingly long-winded.
Hard to stick with the story; it just went on and on, using five sentences when one would do. The only reason I got through it is because of Scott Brick's excellent narration.

Historia
The first storm comes from, of all places, the Minnesota zoo. Two large and very rare Amur tigers have vanished from their cage, and authorities are worried sick that they've been stolen for their body parts. Traditional Chinese medicine prizes those parts for home remedies, and people will do extreme things to get what they need. Some of them are a great deal more extreme than others - as Virgil is about to find out.

Historia
Jesse Stone is back on the job after a stint in rehab, and the road to recovery is immediately made bumpy by a series of disturbing and apparently racially motivated crimes, beginning with the murder of an African American woman. Then, Jesse's own deputy Alisha - the first black woman hired by the Paradise police force - becomes the target of a sophisticated frame-up. As he and his team work tirelessly to unravel the truth, he has to wonder if this is just one part of an even grander plot, one with an endgame more destructive than any of them can imagine.

Decent plot, but...
Revisado: 06-30-22
The characters were pretty well thought out and the storyline was decent. What bothered me was the ponderous, overly explanatory writing style; my first thought was that this was written for 12-year-olds. I may try reading another by the same author, just to see if his style changes at all--if not, that will be my last foray into Jon Mills' books.

The performance was excellent! However, the story just dragged.
.. The concept was good, but there was a lot of hand-wringing and excessively emotional descriptions and explanations. I was tempted to give up on it several times; just managed to drag myself through it. The story could do with some editing to make it tighter. I really liked the author's Orphan X, could have done without this one

Historia
Dr. Emory Charbonneau, a pediatrician and marathon runner, disappears on a mountain road in North Carolina. By the time her husband Jeff, miffed over a recent argument, reports her missing, the trail has grown cold. Literally. Fog and ice encapsulate the mountainous wilderness and paralyze the search for her. While police suspect Jeff of "instant divorce," Emory, suffering from an unexplained head injury, regains consciousness and finds herself the captive of a man whose violent past is so dark that he won't even tell her his name.

Very good performance (which helped me get through the book). The story was laughingly implausible, 12-year-old girls would love it. Lots of illogical actions--after the main male character has spent lots of time and effort to track people down and make their punishment fit their "crimes", the FBI guy finally catches up and hey, all is forgiven--Hayes is not a wanted man after all. That's just one unbelievable scenario. This author likes to create unrealistic, almost one-dimensional characters and throw in lots of hot sex. If that's what you're looking for, this is the book for you.

Great story, disconcerting narrator
Revisado: 11-17-15
Would you listen to The English Spy again? Why?
Yes; I have listened to all of the Gabriel Allon novels and enjoy revisiting them.
Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
George Guidall is an excellent narrator. BUT--and this is my personal prejudice-- when I hear his voice, I hear the character of Walt Longmire (another of my favorite series). Therefore, I prefer the narration of Phil Gigante for the Allon books. It's just disconcerting to listen to "Walt Longmire" narrate this book.
Any additional comments?
Can't wait for the next Gabriel Allon novel.

Not as good as more recent Harlan Coben books
Revisado: 11-10-14
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Those who are not concerned with overblown dialog and descriptions.
Would you ever listen to anything by Harlan Coben again?
I have enjoyed more recent books by Harlan Coben.
Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
The best thing about this audiobook was Scott Brick's performance.
Any additional comments?
Despite the disclaimer at the start of the book, Coben should NEVER have released this as a "new" audiobook. (It was written over 20 years ago and may be his first book.) Listening to it was like slogging through molasses---dialog and descriptions were overblown, and there are holes in the plotline big enough to drive a truck through. I have enjoyed his more recent books-- the stories are taut and engaging. Play Dead just can't compare--it's for those who like hand-wringing, emotional dialog and florid descriptions. Sorry I purchased it.
