Again, Nicholas Sparks leave one with a smile and a tear. I am so familiar with the places he has named throughout the state as I, too, live in North Carolina.

1989 Dachau Concentration Camp
Revisado: 07-19-24
While stationed in Augsburg, Germany went to Dachau Concentration Camp. What a sad and heavy experience. The life-size still photos of suffering. The prisoners were so painfully thin and clearly in anguish. We went to the sleeping quarters, and then the worst, the incinerators. I honestly, honestly felt a real feeling heavy weight lifted from my shoulders when I left through the gate, ’Arbeit Mach Frei’ (Work Make Free)

Historia
On a cold day in March of 1911, officials marched twelve Black men into the heart of a forest in Maryland. Under the supervision of a doctor, the men were forced to clear the land, pour cement, lay bricks, and harvest tobacco. When construction finished, they became the first twelve patients of the state’s Hospital for the Negro Insane. For centuries, Black patients have been absent from our history books. Madness transports listeners behind the brick walls of a Jim Crow asylum. In Madness, journalist Antonia Hylton tells the 93-year-old history of Crownsville Hospital.

I identify
Revisado: 02-29-24
Thank you for shining the light on mental illnesses . I spent my childhood being shuttled between living with my mother and stepdad until she became too unhinged , then having to be institutionalized due a schizophrenic episode, then off to the care of the state, a foster care. Additionally was her husband’s alcoholism and the physical fighting /abuse.

Historia
The day after future NBA superstar Chris Paul signed his letter of intent to play college basketball for Wake Forest, he received a world-shattering phone call. His grandfather, Nathaniel "Papa" Jones, a pillar of the Winston-Salem community where he owned and operated the first Black-owned service station in North Carolina, was mugged and ultimately died from a heart attack resulting from the assault. His funeral filled the largest church in the county, which held over 1,000 people. He was 61 years old.

Revisado: 07-08-23
A well done book, read by the original author, Chris Paul, himself. What a super bond he held with his grandfather, one which, including myself, will ever be experienced.
The struggles of African Americans, especially those of males, were truthfully told about. Will it ever end?!! Chris Paul, thank you for doing all you’re doing to enable the young and old to keep moving forward.
