Historia
Into the maelstrom of unprecedented contemporary debates about immigrants in the United States, this perfectly timed book gives us a portrait of what the new immigrant experience in America is really like. Written as a "guide" for the newly arrived, and providing "practical information and advice", Roya Hakakian, an immigrant herself, reveals what those who settle here love about the country, what they miss about their homes, the cruelty of some Americans, and the unceasing generosity of others.

Eye opening
Revisado: 04-13-21
This book should be required reading in every American high school. It describes aspects of the refugee/immigrant experience that even the longest magazine articles ignore, and it also made me think about things I take for granted as an American. Parts of it were very funny, and others, rather sad.

Historia
It is 1988. On a dead-end street in a run-down suburb there is a music shop that stands small and brightly lit, jam-packed with records of every kind. Like a beacon, the shop attracts the lonely, the sleepless, and the adrift; Frank, the shop's owner, has a way of connecting his customers with just the piece of music they need. Then, one day, into his shop comes a beautiful young woman, Ilse Brauchmann, who asks Frank to teach her about music.

If you love music, get this
Revisado: 07-22-20
This book made me laugh and cry. It is very well-written and has wonderful insights about both music and life. There are parts where the story drags a little, but be patient and keep listening. Don't expect everything to be realistic; just enjoy it for what it is. I especially recommend this book to classical music lovers.

Interesting and original
Revisado: 03-18-19
I would classify this book as "magical realism," a genre I generally don't like. But "The Night Tiger" was very compelling in many ways. I'd recommend reading it, rather than listening to it, because there are a lot of characters with non-western names. It is easy to confuse them, especially in a story as complicated as this one.
I gave the narrator only three stars only because she had a tendency to pause in the middle of phrases. That did a disservice to the writing. She did a good job with giving the characters different voices.

Historia
Following her retirement from Princeton University, celebrated historian Dr. Nell Irvin Painter surprised everyone in her life by returning to school - in her 60s - to earn a BFA and MFA in painting. In Old in Art School, she travels from her beloved Newark to the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design; finds meaning in the artists she loves, even as she comes to understand how they may be undervalued; and struggles with the unstable balance between the pursuit of art and the inevitable, sometimes painful, demands of a life fully lived.

Both interesting and boring
Revisado: 07-13-18
Too long and academic but with many important messages about being “old,” black, and female. Interesting to me as a poet because all the arts have similarities. Painter’s struggles with self-confidence will strike a chord with readers in creative professions.

Historia
John Mauceri brings a lifetime of experience to bear in an unprecedented, hugely informative, consistently entertaining exploration of his profession, rich with anecdotes from decades of working alongside the greatest names of the music world. With candor and humor, Mauceri makes clear that conducting is itself a composition: of legacy and tradition, techniques handed down from master to apprentice - and more than a trace of ineffable magic.

Historia
Kiera Van Gelder's first suicide attempt at the age of 12 marked the onset of her struggles with drug addiction, depression, post-traumatic stress, self-harm, and chaotic romantic relationships - all of which eventually led to doctors' belated diagnosis of borderline personality disorder 20 years later. The Buddha and the Borderline is a window into this mysterious and debilitating condition, an unblinking portrayal of one woman's fight against the emotional devastation of borderline personality disorder.

Informative but repetitive
Revisado: 12-11-17
Until listening to this book, I was convinced that my mother had BPD. Now I know that is not the case. Kira is a good writer, but I got tired of listening to her problems while at the same time, feeling sorry for her. I don’t recommend this book to anyone except those who think they might have BPD or are involved with someone who has the disorder. Also, the book reinforced my belief that people who gravitate to Buddhism are often very screwed up. (That view is based on personal experience.)

Read this if you like being depressed
Revisado: 10-22-17
I found this book hard to stomach, although it taught me some things about Nigerian culture. It does a good job showing how flawed humans can be and how we deceive both ourselves and others. But it is incredibly depressing. Also, it’s very strange that when the characters are telling their story to the reader, they speak with a British accent, but when they’re talking to each other, they use dialect. There are some surprises in the plot that kept me listening until the end, but I almost quit many times. I don’t recommend this book to anyone.

Historia
After a lifetime defining herself in contrast to her mother's "don't ask, don't tell" generation, Lerner finds herself back in her childhood home, not five miles from the mother she spent decades avoiding. When Roz needs help after surgery, it falls to Betsy to take care of her. She expected a week of tense civility; what she gets instead are the Bridge Ladies. Impressed by their loyalty, she sees something her generation lacks. Facebook is great, but it won't deliver a pot roast.

This book is excellently written-- funny and profound. I grew up in an environment similar to the author's, which enhanced the content for me. My only criticism is that the narrator mangled all the Yiddish words.

Melodrama and humor
Revisado: 05-05-16
Would you consider the audio edition of The Count of Monte Cristo to be better than the print version?
Yes. The narrator of this book is spectacular. I tried reading the book years ago and never got through it, but Bill Homewood was so entertaining that I kept listening to the end. He does lots of different voices and really plays up the sarcasm and melodrama.
What other book might you compare The Count of Monte Cristo to and why?
I've never read anything quite like it. It's so old fashioned. A book like this would never be published today-- but that's what's fun about it.
Have you listened to any of Bill Homewood’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Prepare for a roller coaster!
Any additional comments?
It takes a lot of patience to get through this book because there are all kinds of side plots that really aren't relevant to the story. (For the example, we learn the entire history of a bandit who is important in the plot, but we don't need to know his background.) I think it's worth the time invested, though--especially if you are listening while you're doing something you don't want to be doing, like walking circles around a track! It's a good distraction. And it taught me some things about French history.
