Historia
The Vanderbeekers have always lived in the brownstone on 141st Street. It's practically another member of the family. So when their reclusive, curmudgeonly landlord decides not to renew their lease, the five siblings have 11 days to do whatever it takes to stay in their beloved home and convince the dreaded Beiderman just how wonderful they are. And all is fair in love and war when it comes to keeping their home. A modern classic in the making reminiscent of the Penderwicks series.

Super Whiney
Revisado: 03-03-25
We are over nine chapters in and the book is just characters complaining on repeat and calling their landlord names simply because he decided to do something different with a house that he owns. So victimy. Every child and adult character simply says a version of “things are so bad” or “things aren’t going my way.” I literally just yelled at the book “move already!” My goodness. We will continue reading in the hope there is some redeeming quality like the kids realize the error of their ways in calling their landlord, bad names, and pretending to stab his eyes out using gum drops and needles because a common, every day life event (moving) happened to them. On the plus side, the narrator is fantastic. She gets 5 stars.

Historia
Springtime is finally arriving on Gardam Street, and there are surprises in store for each member of the family. Some surprises are just wonderful, like neighbor Nick Geiger coming home from war. And some are ridiculous, like Batty's new dog-walking business. Batty is saving up her dog-walking money for an extra-special surprise for her family, which she plans to present on her upcoming birthday. But when some unwelcome surprises make themselves known, the best-laid plans fall apart.

Our beloved Penderwicks are growing up
Revisado: 05-23-24
So many surprises! After we got over the initial shock that they are so much older, we were right back in the plotline and really invested! This series is so fun and we love this reading of the book! Five stars from our family of lots of girls and one boy :)

Historia
John Taylor Gatto's Weapons of Mass Instruction focuses on mechanisms of traditional education which cripple imagination, discourage critical thinking, and create a false view of learning as a byproduct of rote-memorization drills. Gatto's earlier book, Dumbing Us Down, introduced the now-famous expression of the title into the common vernacular. Weapons of Mass Instruction adds another chilling metaphor to the brief against conventional schooling.

Historia
Thirty years in New York City's public schools led John Gatto to the sad conclusion that compulsory schooling does little but teach young people to follow orders like cogs in an industrial machine. With over 100,000 copies in print since its original publication in 2002, this book is collection of essays and speeches and includes a describes the wide-spread impact of the book and Gatto's "guerrilla teaching". John Gatto was a teacher in New York City's public schools for over 30 years and was a New York State Teacher of the Year.

A must read for Americans
Revisado: 01-19-23
This book is a must read for anyone who has children, who contributes tax dollars to the school system, or anyone who has been affected by the school system here in America. Dumbing Us Down asks us to take a look at the current education system and, through impressive storytelling, will motivate readers to make local, lasting changes.
