A peak-performance expert maps out a revolutionary new practice - hedonic engineering - that combines the best of neuroscience and optimal psychology. It’s an intensive program of breathing, movement, and sexuality that mends trauma, heightens inspiration, and tightens connections - helping us wake up, grow up, and show up for a world that needs us all.

An interesting trip
Revisado: 01-26-22
Jamie Wheal does a great job of identifying our current existential problems. He does a good job exploring the science of brain chemistry and means of altering it. His solutions are esoteric, not easily scalable, and those who need his recommended interventions the most, are the ones that would resist his prescribed path the most.
It’s a good book, an impressive catalog of the science of mysticism, and it may push some into some truly liberating experiences, but I wouldn’t call it a clear path forward.

In fact, fascism’s roots have been present in the United States for more than a century.

“How Fascism Works” is an excellent deconstruction of the means and methods fascist use to control people and gain power. Jason Stanley does a great job bringing to light the elusive obvious elements of fascism. Everyone should read this.

Historia
What happens when the President of the United States governs one Tweet at a time? When the elected leader of the free world may not have a firm grasp on the names of government agencies, much less an understanding of their intricate inner-workings? In the days following the 2016 inauguration, government personnel searched for answers that didn’t exist, while White House staff scoured halls for employees who would never be appointed.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don’t understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.

The ignorant do not create bliss
Revisado: 12-09-20
This book is to the topic of ignorance as The Origin of Species was to the topic of Biology.
Much like The Origin of the Species, the examples are a bit exhaustive. That said, the content is good and Carl Sagan was a gift to the human race.
This book is a forceful defense of science and the need for widespread scientific literacy.

Historia
In this groundbreaking book, journalist and innovation expert Warren Berger shows that one of the most powerful forces for igniting change in business and in our daily lives is a simple, underappreciated tool - one that has been available to us since childhood. Questioning - deeply, imaginatively, "beautifully" - can help us identify and solve problems, come up with game-changing ideas, and pursue fresh opportunities. So why are we often reluctant to ask "Why?"

Good book, well narrated.
It's the things that seem intuitive that we often struggle to improve upon because we lack the framework to think about it properly.
Some of this content may seem trite, but it's not. The book reveals elusive obvious concepts, that will benefit anyone who embraces them.

Historia
Here is an impassioned plea for reason in a world divided by faith. This important and timely work delivers a startling analysis of the clash of faith and reason in today's world. Harris offers a vivid historical tour of mankind's willingness to suspend reason in favor of religious beliefs, even when those beliefs are used to justify harmful behavior and sometimes heinous crimes.

Religion will be the death of humanity
Revisado: 01-12-20
This book does a good job of analyzing the three major faiths, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The fact that Jews's messiah has never materialized, Christian's messiah is a mythological person, and Islam's messiah was an actual king who had worldly rules has, and continues to have an important impact on how the faithful think about their faith and its place in the world. Beyond the decent overview of these faiths, Sam Harris does a good job making the point that training people to have faith (belief beyond reason) in fairy tales is dangerous. His book was written in the shadow of multiple Muslim terrorist acts, but with American Evangelicals having taken over many levers of power in the U.S. his premise that religion will be the death of us all is likely valid, but I'm betting the white supremist Evangelicals will do more damage in the years to come than any other religious actors.

For many centuries, the world of Islam was at the forefront of human achievement: the foremost military and economic power in the world, the leader in the arts and sciences of civilization. Christian Europe, a remote land beyond its northwestern frontier, was seen as an outer darkness of barbarism and unbelief from which there was nothing to learn or to fear.

Thinking you are great will guarantee you are not
Revisado: 01-12-20
Those who believe in "American Exceptionalism" need to read this book. If you hold up the foam #1 hand and think you have nothing to learn from others, you will guaranteed your slide into ignorance and irrelevance. This is the general premise of "What Went Wrong." The Arab world 1,000-years ago was open and a place of learning. They were so advanced in relative terms to their peers in the West that they felt they had nothing to gain from learning from them. They rejected Western knowledge and understanding for so long that they fell behind.
There are likely other explanations, like a slide into religious fundamentalism, the curse of oil, etc., but this book looks back further and the parallels for personal or cultural understanding are valid. If you want to be the best, you can't have an ego that gets bruised when you are wrong. After all, the more willing you are to be wrong, the more right you will be in the future.

Revisado: 01-12-20
War is possible because we love? Apparently yes, and it makes sense on reflection. Also, war is fun, right up until your buddy gets killed. The extreme situations and emotions form an addition. This book is an interesting read written from a war correspondent who experienced war first hand.
