Gross
Revisado: 04-22-25
Child r*pe, cousin incest and “we’re aliens” group delusion afterwards that results in a cult commune and cannibalism for no reason.
There’s no point. It’s just gross. Don’t do it.

Historia
Rowan's attempt to escape Lasher and his pursuit of her and their child are at the heart of this extraordinary saga. It is a novel that moves around the globe, backward and forward through time, and between the human and demonic worlds. Its many voices - of women, of men, of demons and angels, present and past - haunt and enchant us. With a dreamlike power, the novel draws us through twilight paths, telling a chillingly hypnotic story of occult and spiritual aspirations and passion.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

This is incredible
Revisado: 04-23-24
Bought on a whim when a booktoker called it a masterpiece in such a convincing way I figured it would be worth a shot since I was in a book slump.
She was right. Make sure you’re rested before you start this. Putting it down to go to sleep was legitimately agonizing.
Try to go in as blind as possible, it’s much better that way. Enjoy.

I’m sorry, but I hated it.
Revisado: 04-23-24
I found out about this because I listen to morbid podcast and the author is a host on there. I was pretty stoked for this because they do such a great job on the podcast. If you don’t want to read unkind things, go no further.
I know from the podcast that the author has a job as an autopsy tech: exactly the same as her character. She named the main cop character after her husband. Her character is targeted by a serial killer like the ones she covers in her true crime podcast. Her character gets *way* more involved in the case than would ever be allowed with her job description. And the constant moralizing of things she does in her real life. “I’ve dedicated my life to speaking for victims” is written in more than once. Like. Ew, dude.
Knowing what I do, this played out in my mind like her writing herself into the book as “the one who got away” victim role who also gets to do hero stuff and is the total center of attention of a serial killer even though she moved away and changed her name.
It gives me some hardcore reluctant hero/not like other girls/pick me/narcissism ick. Especially since she has every resource in her daily life to know better. I was expecting an informed crime novel and 100% did not get it.
And the story just… isn’t good. Ends on a cliffhanger, nothing is resolved and is obviously trying to give you bait to go to the next book in the inevitable series.
I’m going to be honest, I might not even be able to listen to her podcast after this. I’ll just think she’s playing out a weird fantasy as the victims she covers.
If you’re here from the podcast and any of this would bother you… maybe don’t. I don’t think I’m going to be able to look at her the same now and that just kind of sucks. I feel gross now.
On the positive side, the voice actors did a good job.

Richard Papen had never been to New England before his 19th year. Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

I thought I knew what was happening with a just a few questions for quite a while, but then it got me right in the gut with what’s actually happened. There’s a happy component with the sad so it’s not just straight terrible at the end. Ugh. The parents. My eyes. Worth the read.

Historia
Fresh out of rehab, Mallory Quinn takes a job as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy. Mallory immediately loves it. She has her own living space, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body.

Great work
Revisado: 08-17-23
At first I was convinced I wasn’t going to like this book. Even finished a few others after a few chapters. Glad I went back to rage finish.
The heavy Christianity early on got under my skin and made me silently curse good reads for suggesting it. Add the dramatic drug past right up front and I eye rolled right on to something else.
For those of you who have the same problem-it’s not a main focus and only used as character paint for the first few chapters to drive in the NA background and then is seldom mentioned and no longer obnoxious.
If you know people with a storied past or are one, it turns out to actually be understanding in the end and won’t leave you fuming. Also doesn’t encourage or romanticize if you don’t. Good balance there.
I’d say parents would def want to read it first before deciding if it were teen friendly, though. Certainly not younger.
It’s a story that is best experienced with as little info going in as possible, but as it turns out, good reads still has good taste. Satisfyingly creative, onion layered characters, ingenious story telling and a real page turner with a knock out ending. Narration does a great job as well.
If you’ve made it to my review, you should definitely get it. If you’re in any kind of book circle, this would make an excellent discussion piece.
Enjoy.

Historia
Between what can be learned from evolutionary psychology and cognitive science a picture emerges. In Sex, Murder, and the Meaning of Life, social psychologist Douglas Kenrick fuses these two fields to create a coherent story of human nature. In his analysis, many ingrained, apparently irrational behaviors—one-night stands, prejudice, conspicuous consumption, even art and religious devotion—are quite explicable and (when desired) avoidable.

Comes off like a weird sermon
Revisado: 05-25-21
To be fair, I didn't finish this, I only made it to chapter 6. From me, that in itself is a review because I'm a bit of a completionist and try to finish everything I start... I'm just not interested in anything else it has to say.
I really should have read the reviews because the first few you see are pretty spot on. This comes off weirdly as some old guy writing a manifesto about how it's natural for men to be attracted to younger women and women looking for resources. Like. We get it bro, you like little girls and you think all they're interested in is money. Let's move on. The personal brags also just make it evident this is a weird guy.
The big problem with this, though is it's not objective and he said so much where I left of. To paraphrase, essentially he's explaining why his opinion makes something right despite criticisms he's been given.
You want to give the benefit of the doubt, but that was the "not worth my time" nail in the coffin for me. I don't buy a book on a subject to get a memoir in disguise from a biased author. I get it, a lot of authors do this and it's ok, they're trying to get you to connect to the material, but the material here barely holds weight. There are several points I noticed in this where I recognized the data given, but also that certain other bits were conveniently left out to support his narrative.
On a whole, disappointing. If you're looking for something with a bit more weight about human nature and an only slightly annoying butt-ins about the author's life, I just finished "the anatomy of violence", which was good and hits topics this should have from a respectable research standpoint along with good detail and pace.

I was hoping for detail into the practice with a title like this.
Sadly, this is 1 part the most basic info you have probably already read for free and 1 part this lady tooting her own horn like she's special.
Also, at least the numerology part is inaccurate.
Look elsewhere.
