Historia
In 1943, when a frail old white woman shows up in Red Clay, Alabama, at the home of a Black former slave—on the morning following his funeral—his family hardly knows what to expect after she utters the words “… a lifetime ago, my family owned yours.” Adelaide Parker has a story to tell—one of ambition, betrayal, violence, and redemption—that shaped both the fate of her family and that of the late Felix H. Parker. But there are gaps in her knowledge, and she’s come to Red Clay seeking answers from a family with whom she shares a name and a history that neither knows in full.

Great narrator!

I enjoyed the well-told story (with unexpected twists), the character development, and the authenticity of each character’s voice. The reality of slave life is a part of history that should be heard and remembered by each one of us.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Historia
After more than a decade, when sisters Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek hear the word mom, it claws like an eagle’s talons, triggering memories that have been their secret since childhood. Until now. For years, behind the closed doors of their farmhouse in Raymond, Washington, their sadistic mother, Shelly, subjected her girls to unimaginable abuse, degradation, torture, and psychic terrors. Through it all, Nikki, Sami, and Tori developed a defiant bond that made them far less vulnerable than Shelly imagined.

Tough Read!
Revisado: 09-06-20
This was tough to hear sometimes as far as the details of the abuse but I don’t doubt for a minute that these things happened. I feel for the girls and all involved. One reviewer said the abuse was so far fetched that it was “unbelievable”. I think that’s what abusers count on - if the child or adult tells, they won’t be believed! Abusers groom their victims to take away all their self-worth and manipulate them into staying. It doesn’t make sense to some of us because we’ve never gone through something so horrific. Another reviewer said if the abuse was as described, the girls would have serious issues. I’m sure they do but may not want to share that portion of their story.
I feel like Dave and Shelli got off WAY too easy. And why in the world did Dave go along with the abuse! I wish the (step)grandmother and even the aunt had followed through after knowing that something wasn’t right in that house! I also wonder why staff and teachers at their school didn’t see any signs of abuse or neglect. Heart breaking.....
