Historia
Hollywood Park is a remarkable memoir of a tumultuous life. Mikel Jollett was born into one of the country’s most infamous cults and subjected to a childhood filled with poverty, addiction, and emotional abuse. Yet, ultimately, his is a story of fierce love and family loyalty told in a raw, poetic voice that signals the emergence of a uniquely gifted writer.

This was excellent in every way!
Revisado: 06-12-20
Wow! I am completely blown away by this story and by Mikel. One of my favorite authors posted something on her Instagram story about being excited to read this memoir when it came out, so I looked it up. It sounded interesting. I'd heard of The Airborne Toxic Event but never listened to much of their music, and I knew nothing about Synanon, the commune/cult where this story begins. A rockstar who was born in a cult and taken from his parents, grows up poor, faces a ton of challenges, and makes it out on top... It had all the makings of a captivating story, so I decided to read it. I am so glad I did. Mikel is an excellent writer and story teller. His words are profound. Sad. Beautiful. The way he weaves his story together in such an honest and unique way is spellbinding. His words are graceful and gritty, soft and loud. Really. Just wow. I want to read more. I want to hear more. I definitely need to get the album with the same name, as well as their others. I highly recommend this!! 5 stars all around.

Cute story. Narration was great. I feel like it took a really long time to get through it, though. I enjoyed the story, I just think some of it could have been left out or made more concise. I really liked a quote from the book, though.... "It's in the broken places where the light gets in." Nice way of turning a negative into a positive.

Impeccable writing, slow build
Revisado: 04-22-19
While the story itself seemed to move along rather slowly, the writing was outstanding and the ending was worth the read.

Cute story. Probably not one I would buy, but it was good for a free story and the shortness of it was perfect.

So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Riveting, must-read story!
Revisado: 01-06-19
This story has all the feels. Once I was pulled in, I couldn't stop listening. I usually only listen to audible in the car during my long daily commute to and from work. With this story, I found myself not being able to wait to hear more. I listened with earbuds at home, staying up til late just so I could find out more. This definitely moves up to one of my all-time favorite books! And the ending was a perfect surprise! I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.

Not what I anticipated...
Revisado: 10-13-18
The cover of this book is what drew me in. I was hoping it would be a riveting story like 'Before We Were Yours', given the summary and subject matter. However, it took 12 chapters for anything all that interesting to happen. If I hadn't chosen this to be our book of the month for our book club, I'm not sure I would have been all that interested in continuing with it. The story did eventually pick up, but there were some far fetched plot lines toward the end that didn't seem very realistic. Also, the audible file shows 44 chapters but ended at 39. This was also very misleading, as I was expecting more to the story. All in all the book was okay, but not one I would recommend to others. Especially given the really slow build and abrupt end. Rather disappointing, actually.

Historia
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

The narration made this story so much better!
Revisado: 09-25-18
The narration was amazing on this story. Mr. Corduner brought this story to life in a way that would never have been possible in the traditional way of reading. I'm not sure I would have gotten through an actual book. Definitely a sad story, and the author jumps around to different points of time in an odd way. Had it not been an audio book, I'm pretty sure I'd have given up on it. The overall story was very good, though, and the author has an exceptional way of describing things, so I'm glad I listened to the whole thing. I enjoyed it as a whole and would recommend it to others.

A dark tale with even darker characters!
Revisado: 08-23-18
Writer definitely did a good job of creating demented characters. The story took a couple chapters to pull me in, but was compelling soon after. I hadn't realized there was a show created based on the novel. I am intrigued to watch it to see how it compares. Great book for anyone who enjoys a creepy tale with a twist.

A Beautiful & Tragic Story
Revisado: 08-09-18
I was intrigued from the beginning. The narrators did an amazing job of portraying all the different characters in the story. I felt like I was watching a movie at times. The author creates vivid imagery with her words. The story was filled with emotion, both sad and happy. I am a tad wistful that it is over. I do highly recommend it. It was a perfect first audio book for me!
