Historia
In November 1921, the first purpose-built aircraft carrier was launched by the Japanese, followed a year later by the launch of the British Hermes. The conversion of battle cruisers into aircraft carriers after World War I required the consideration of issues including handling aircraft on the flight deck and the techniques of attacking enemy ships, and the evolution of carrier operations was ongoing when World War II broke out.

Revisado: 01-20-25
The title is misleading. This book is not about how carriers fought. It’s about how accountants and actuaries think carriers fought. Robert McNamara would be proud. But it is a thoroughly discredited method of analysis when it comes to war

Historia
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

Authentic and well written and told. Great humor throughout; the author doesn’t take himself too seriously even though as a SBS Marine he could be excused if he did. Highly recommend.

Historia
In 1942, in its rush to assemble a force of seven million to take on the Axis powers, the Army discovered it had inducted some iffy patriots. Unsure of what to do with them, the Army put them all into a misfit company: the 620th Engineer General Service Company. Seething, they considered disobedience, desertion, and, ultimately, a plan to sabotage the war effort. That’s when Dale Maple and two German POWs deserted. Their plans: get to Germany and persuade the government to supply money and materials for guerilla war on US soil. That’s when their fates took an only-in-America turn.

Really a terrible book
Revisado: 04-13-23
I’ll start with the misleading title. The author treats the actual plot only superficially and spends much more time on the postwar and post incarceration of the perpetrators. That story is pedestrian at best and, frankly, boring. I found myself longing for the book to just end. Worst of all, the author uses a promising title to lure readers into his apparently socialist-leaning junk political and social science commentary, which can only be described as nauseating. Of all the books I have listened to on Audible, this one is by far the worst.

Historia
Peter Ratcliffe served in the SAS for 25 years. Blooded in Oman in the 1970s, he also saw action in Northern Ireland, in the Falklands War, and in the Gulf campaign. From his early days in the Paras to his time as Regimental Sergeant-Major in the Gulf, he has lived and fought by the motto 'who dares wins'. Eye of the Storm is his insider's account of that exceptional career.

I ordered it as an afterthought
Revisado: 02-06-23
I ordered this book as an afterthought and forgot about it in my library for some time. I clicked on it after finishing another book without knowing what the subject matter. Turns out that this was one of the best military books I’ve ever read. It rings true in so many ways. The author’s frankness is refreshing and his story fascinating.

Historia
In Soldiers of a Different Cloth, New York Times best-selling author and military historian John Wukovits tells the inspiring story of 35 chaplains and missionaries who, while garnering little acclaim, performed extraordinary feats of courage and persistence during World War II. Ranging in age from 22 to 53, these University of Notre Dame priests and nuns were counselor, friend, parent, and older sibling to the young soldiers they served. These chaplains experienced the horrors of the Death March in the Philippines and the filthy holds of the infamous Hell Ships.

“If I were God, what would you want for Christmas?” With a thousand-yard stare, a haggard and bloodied marine looked incredulously at the war correspondent who asked him this question. In an answer that took “almost forever,” the marine responded, “Give me tomorrow." After nearly four months of continuous and bloody combat in Korea, such a wish seemed impossible.

Historia
Up until now, the Korean War has been the black hole of modern American history. The Coldest Winter changes that. Halberstam gives us a masterful narrative of the political decisions and miscalculations on both sides. He charts the disastrous path that led to the massive entry of Chinese forces near the Yalu, and that caught Douglas MacArthur and his soldiers by surprise. He provides astonishingly vivid and nuanced portraits of all the major figures.

Disappointing overall
Revisado: 09-11-22
As a student of the Korean War, I looked forward to this book. Unfortunately, though it’s style of writing was excellent the content was underwhelming to me.
Much of the first third of the book had little connection to the actual Korean War, making me think that the title was misleading.
The book is mainly a history of the US Army in the first year or so of the war. That aspect is well written and the stories of the soldiers compelling.
While the book references the experience of the Marine Corps, it provides little detail.
It points out the failings of the US Army but provides little detail as to why the Army failed whereas the Marine Corps was exemplary. Nor does it explain why one performed poorly while the other performed well, which was a key story of the first year of the war.
The author’s opinion on confronting communism is controversial to say the least, claiming that it was not a monolithic threat but a series of nationalistic movements and conflicts. History does not reflect this in fact.
Had America subscribed to that view, the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact would never have collapsed.
