Historia
New York, 1960: For Benny Lament, music is his entire life. With his father’s deep ties to the mob, the Bronx piano man has learned that love and family can get you in trouble. So he keeps to himself, writing songs for other musicians, avoiding the spotlight…until the night his father brings him to see Esther Mine sing. Esther is a petite powerhouse with a gorgeous voice. And when Benny writes a hit song and performs it with her, their collaboration thrusts the duo onto the national stage…and stirs up old issues and new scrutiny that the mob--and Benny--would rather avoid.

I loved this book from the first paragraph
Revisado: 08-16-24
My friend recommended that I listen to this book. She said she was unsure about it at first but then got into it and wound up loving it. Not me, I loved it from the beginning. It is a beautiful love story that takes in racial challenges as well as mob life expectations. Family love is strong throughout the book. It was a winner for me. I loved the characters.

Love the resilience of Tracey and Andrea.
Revisado: 01-13-24
I enjoy reading books where the female characters are strong women. They ultimately triumph over the enormous challenges the author, Robert Dugan, puts in their path. He must know some very strong women to use as models for his stories.

Historia
Mark Rivers was a firefighter until he got trapped in a wildfire and suffered third-degree burns on his face and body. After a year of recovering, Mark is trying to piece his life back together but struggles both emotionally and psychologically. He's been a recluse until he forces himself to attend his niece's school play and sees Riley, the school's art teacher. Immediately, Mark feels a connection to her. Maybe it's the kind way she greets his niece or the way the art she created for the school play is reminiscent of his late mom's artwork.

I was ready not to like it because of other reviews
Revisado: 12-11-23
Some reviews said it was very hard to follow because of all the texting and all the characters. I was feeling that in the beginning also and then all of a sudden it started making sense and was easy to follow. My favorite parts were still where Strike and Robin would have collaborating conversations. This was a different format for me but I still enjoyed it very much.

Totally Captivating
Revisado: 11-11-23
I love the ongoing development of the characters especially Strike and Robin. This is a series that, if it continues forever, I will very happily follow. The writing is superb and the narration is excellent. I usually listen to audible books while running or taking long walks. This book made me extend both just so I could keep listening. In the end I was listening in the car as well as in the house, just every minute I could manage. So many little sub plots, interesting interaction between very unusual characters. I can’t wait for the next in the series.

A World War II story from a different angle
Revisado: 12-24-22
I really enjoyed how the author unfolded this story and added the skills of illusion throughout.
I have read a lot of WW II historical fiction but this one was refreshingly different.

Historia
Lina Meisel, a retired librarian in Florida, is reading the newspaper one morning when she freezes. Her eyes lock on a photograph of a book she hasn’t seen in 65 years - a book she recognizes as The Book of Lost Names. The accompanying article discusses the looting of libraries by the Nazis across Europe during World War II - an experience Lina remembers well - and the search to reunite people with the texts stolen from them so long ago. The book in the photograph is one of the most fascinating cases.

Beautuful story
Revisado: 08-25-20
I really enjoyed hearing about the French Resistance and the individuals who helped the Jewish children escape to Switzerland. As forgers Ava and Remmy had a strong tie which lead to a deep love never to be forgotten. The characters were well developed and the story moved along. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys knowing more about the side stories of World War II.

Historia
When Hannah learns that her sister Michelle's boyfriend, Detective Lonnie Murphy, is the prime suspect in a murder case, she goes straight from a movie studio sound stage to the Los Angeles airport. Back in frigid Minnesota, she discovers that proving Lonnie's innocence will be harder than figuring out what went wrong with a recipe. Lonnie remembers only parts of the night he went out to a local bar and ended up driving a very impaired woman home.

Maybe it is just me
Revisado: 05-15-20
Maybe other people know they will be getting 75% recipes read to you and 25% story content. I didn’t know. Maybe other people knew it was more a young readers novel but I didn’t know before purchasing it. The recipes sounded delicious but it was like reading a telephone book to me especially since it never stopped. Each chapter had at least one or two recipes. The story was simple and somewhat entertaining and not difficult to see coming a mile away. I would have sent the book back but I was too far into it. I use the audible books to listen to while I run and I was disappointed in this choice for me. I went back to the offering of the book looking for verbiage that would have clued me into what I was getting but I couldn’t see any warnings. I will not be purchasing any other books by this author.
