Any additional comments?

If you find technology interesting and you like to jump in the dark, then Paul Draker ‘s Pyramid Lake should be at the top of your list. The book has everything that you need and nothing that you don’t for a thrilling and thought provoking hi-tech who-dun-it. Mary Shelley would have been entranced by Pyramid Lake as it bends the classic Frankenstein theme flawlessly to the 21st century.

Like Shelley, Draker intelligently explores the inner workings of the human psyche (and the human skull for that matter) and applies contemporary technology with ultra believable detail. As in Draker’s previous work, New Year Island, Pyramid Lake is not for the weak of heart or bladder. The book starts tamely and moves on to hit hard and with unexpected twists that get a bit graphic, all the while keeping the reader wondering who is about to jump out and bite. No spoilers here, but in the end, the book really makes you stop and think about humans and technology…wow

Gabriel Vaughan brings Draker’s characters to life with realistic sounding voice adaptations and accents. His pace and consistency is spot-on which drew me into the story and never distracted. Kudos to Vaughan for consistency in a book with o so many twists, turns and pops. His portrayal of Trevor Lennox, the emotionally unconnected but brilliant lead character was so good I could clearly imagine Trevor's every small expression.

I would highly recommend both Pyramid Lake and Vaughan , my only complaint is that there is no more read. My vote…bring on the sequel!

What did you love best about New Year Island?

There I was minding my own business and up pops a recommendation to read a new thriller by a new author Paul Draker…. well it was on-sale, I had some time on my hands, and it January was after all so why not try New Year Island?

There were those who have reviewed New Year Island and warned about the length, or the ending, so I was a bit wary.

No one warned me, however, about the nail biting or the fact that I would be sitting in my car in the parking lot at work not wanting to get out so that I could hear what would happen next!

Draker works magic in a fresh who-done-it mystery where Hunger Games meets Survivor in an homage to a classic Ten Little Indians theme; but don’t be fooled, New Year Island is to Ten Little Indians as bourbon is to Coca Cola.

No spoilers here but as the book opens, we get to know each of the main characters in an appropriately brief but poignant character development scene. You know how some books have so many characters that you have a hard time remembering who is who from the start? Not here! The development is captivating and page turning, so the Characters stay with you from the start; Kudos to Draker for keeping clarity and punch throughout his story.

Its no coincidence that Draker’s book delivers well on audio; A stellar performance by Teri Shnaubelt keeps each character with their own subtle vocal trait. Timing and inflection are perfect. I love it when a new book can introduce me to a audio performer that I know I will like in other books - I’m going to keep an eye out for Shnaubelt performances.

To me, the book could have been longer, and the ending fit in with the daring and thrilling twists in the plot. I’m looking forward to picking up Draker’s second book Pyramid Lake – A must read on my list.

What other book might you compare New Year Island to and why?

Hunger Games, Ten Little Indians, Survivor

Which scene was your favorite?

Trolling with contestants

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

You missed the nerve cluster. Maybe twist it a little?
