Can't say enough about this book
Revisado: 04-05-23
I recently finished the audiobook and thoroughly enjoyed D. Blixt's alliterative writing style as well as J. Blixt's powerhouse performance (an amazing range of voices, songs, and snarkiness throughout). Reminiscent of Jo March, readers will fall in love with and root for our protagonist as she struggles to make a name for herself (pun intended - you'll get it when you read it) in the late 1800s as a reporter. Fighting for herself as well as many of the downtrodden of her time, Bly must make her way through the "men's sphere" of journalism work to prove her voice is worth listening to. Adventure, romance, and more are abound in this novel, which is even more interesting to me since I teach a brief section about Bly's investigative reporting in my journalism class. The author thoroughly cements the reader in the attitudes and workings of the time period while crafting Bly's exuberance and determination to buck the system and prove exactly what girls are good for. I highly recommend this rollicking novel, and I look forward to her other adventures in this series.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Beautiful, worth it.

I avoided this title for a while, some negative reviews scaring me off, but was quite impressed. Even though, at times I thought Tartt was proving she paid attention in English class, the story and references wove a rich tapestry. I couldn't wait for moments to return to the listening. The narrator heightened the drama with lively voices, that made the characters very real to me.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life - and she's really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow Series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving. Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere. Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go.

Meh…
Revisado: 07-10-15
If you want to spend a novel cursing at the main character for being such an idiot, this is the book for you! I really wanted to like it - I'm a snarky geek, after all. I almost quit halfway through, but I stuck with it for the mildly interesting plot and the occasional chuckle. I found Cath to be a wet blanket, and supporting characters to be more interesting, yet underdeveloped. As others have said, the ending was underwhelming. The reading itself was well done.
