Historia
When Michael Lewis first met him, Sam Bankman-Fried was the world’s youngest billionaire and crypto’s Gatsby. CEOs, celebrities, and leaders of small countries all vied for his time and cash after he catapulted, practically overnight, onto the Forbes billionaire list. Who was this rumpled guy in cargo shorts and limp white socks, whose eyes twitched across Zoom meetings as he played video games on the side?

Lewis lost me
Revisado: 10-12-23
I really have really enjoyed other Lewis books, especially Flash Boys – but ever since The Undoing Project Lewis has been off his game.
There’s just no dramatic tension here the way there was in Flash Boys or The Big Short.
Easy Money - co written by a former actor – is a far better read with a strong point of view and clear antagonists (including SBF.)

Historia
Before Bill Gross was known among investors as the Bond King, he was a gambler. In 1966, a fresh college grad, he went to Vegas armed with his net worth ($200) and a knack for counting cards. Ten thousand dollars and countless casino bans later, he was hooked, so he enrolled in business school. The Bond King is the story of how that whiz kid made American finance his casino.

Being a good writer does not make you a good narrator
Revisado: 05-14-22
Mary Childs is a good writer and knows how to tell her story. But given that this is a big release from a major publishing house, why didn’t someone hire her a narrator? Probably because Mary Childs thought she was the best person to read her own book. WRONG.
I have listened to other authors reading their own books and have never been too bothered, and I’m generally not too fussy about narration.
However, 12 hours of Childs’ unfortunately shrill voice adding inflections to her own self perceived clever witticisms is grating and pretentious at the same time.
I’m soldiering through because I enjoy the subject and story but please, next time just hire a professional.

Historia
MBS is the untold story of how a mysterious young prince emerged from Saudi Arabia’s sprawling royal family to overhaul the economy and society of the richest country in the Middle East - and gather as much power as possible into his own hands. Since his father, King Salman, ascended to the throne in 2015, Mohammed bin Salman has leveraged his influence to restructure the kingdom’s economy, loosen its strict Islamic social codes, and confront its enemies around the region, especially Iran.

Beware MBS trolls
Revisado: 12-29-20
MBS is well written, well researched and offers fascinating insight into the Saudi royal family and specifically it’s up-and-coming crown prince. Hubbard comes across as a top-notch journalist with the credibility and first-hand experience to counter accusations of bias or misinformation.
Despite the original promise of a him being modern reformer, MBS is revealed to be a Machiavellian oppressor of free speech and dialogue. Overall he comes across as a cunning yet hollow figure with a wildly over optimistic assessment of his own vision and ability to implement it.
Not surprisingly MBS would not be particularly thrilled by the revelations exposed here. I would treat most of the negative reviews with a large grain of salt: they were likely created by the same army of Saudi-backed online operatives that are described in detail in this book.

The Harder You Work, The Luckier You Get offers a view inside Joe Ricketts’s mind, giving listeners a visceral understanding of how entrepreneurs think and act differently from the rest of us - how they see the horizon where we just see a spreadsheet. Ricketts also talks honestly about his shortcomings as a manager, the career sacrifices his wife made for his business, the complexity of being a father, and the pain of his mentor’s betrayal and of his brother’s death from of AIDS. Overcoming these and other challenges, he built a company now worth $30 billion.

Good title....

I listened to this this shortly after Schwab's book, which I found much more compelling. Joe is obviously a hard worker (ie. workaholic) but a little too folksy for my taste. The narrative arc just seems a little flat and Joe doesn't seem to have evolved much from the person he started out as - except for being a lot richer!

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Outstanding story that will have you looking forward to your next commute. A Perfect villain for the silicon age and heroes - including the author- who dare to bring the whole sham to light
