In How Asia Works, Joe Studwell distills extensive research into the economics of nine countries - Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and China - into an accessible narrative that debunks Western misconceptions, shows what really happened in Asia and why, and for once makes clear why some countries have boomed while others have languished.

I enjoyed this book. I agree with his ideas on small plot farming, land reform, helping manufacturing get a foothold and exports. These are things which are intuitive if one travels through these regions. There are things he dismissed, or didn't factor in like geography and religion. ... But one can research these subjects separately. The small plot farming was especially inspiring. I feel like the mental benefit of this is also undervalued. Narrator was fine.

Barbara Demick's Nothing to Envy follows the lives of six North Koreans over fifteen years - a chaotic period that saw the death of Kim Il-sung and the unchallenged rise to power of his son, Kim Jong-il, and the devastation of a far-ranging famine that killed one-fifth of the population. Taking us into a landscape never before seen, Demick brings to life what it means to be an average Korean citizen, living under the most repressive totalitarian regime today.

Historia
From across the sea, they came by the thousands, escaping war and poverty in southern China to seek their fortunes in America. Converging on the enormous western worksite of the Transcontinental Railroad, the migrants spent years dynamiting tunnels through the snow-packed cliffs of the Sierra Nevada and laying tracks across the burning Utah desert. Their sweat and blood fueled the ascent of an interlinked, industrial United States. But those of them who survived this perilous effort would be pushed to the margins of American life and then to the fringes of public memory.

Great information

This is a subject who's time has come. In central Utah there are Chinese restaurants owned by the descendants of some of these immigrants. I believe they also worked in the coal mines in Carbon and Huntington UT. They came into a rough wild west. I've heard good things from my pioneer Mormon ancestors about the Chinese immigrants. Of course they were likely a bit more sympathetic given their recent history.

Historia
The Algerian War lasted from 1954 to 1962. It caused the fall of six French governments, led to the collapse of the Fourth Republic, and came close to provoking a civil war on French soil. More than a million Muslim Algerians died in the conflict, and as many European settlers were driven into exile. From the perspective of half a century, it looks less like the last colonial war than the first postmodern one.

Historia
In unforgettable tales of innocence lost under African skies, we follow Godwin's awakening to the often savage struggle between Whites and Blacks, his horror when he is forced to fight in a civil war he detests, and his experiences as a journalist covering the country's violent transition to Black rule as Rhodesia's colonial era comes to an end and the new state of Zimbabwe is born from its bloody ashes. Mukiwa is a poignant, compelling memoir and an invaluable addition to the literature of southern Africa.

I loved the book. I mistakenly thought this was based on a true story. It's a great novel nonetheless. If you've traveled to Maine like myself, This book gives you a peak at the true nature of Maine people. They make the deep south look tame. I'd highly recommend this for anyone who plans on visiting that area. I do appreciate how The people of Maine use their power to keep big money outsiders in their place. Narrator was very good. Author has other books which are worth checking out.

Historia
Robert Caro's monumental book makes public what few outsiders knew: that Robert Moses was the single most powerful man of his time in the City and in the State of New York. And in telling the Moses story, Caro both opens up to an unprecedented degree the way in which politics really happens—the way things really get done in America's City Halls and Statehouses—and brings to light a bonanza of vital information about such national figures as Alfred E. Smith and Franklin D. Roosevelt (and the genesis of their blood feud), about Fiorello La Guardia, John V. Lindsay and Nelson Rockefeller.

Long winded
Revisado: 11-26-24
Bottom line is Robert Moses was a very driven, power hungry man who basically created much of the infrastructure in New York. He liked parks and cars and had a huge ego. A jerk basically .. although a very productive jerk. I don't know if this author used an editor? Or the editor just said screw it about 40 hours in. The reporting is stellar. Unfortunately the author reenforces his points 4x more than necessary. He'll say something like. "The parkway would only allow 1/4 the number of commuters as it could have. If only Robert Moses had included the bus lane", in other words instead of 10000 people an hour , the most it could accommodate was 2500. To say it another way, 3 out of four people were late for work because of the decisions of Robert Moses. 30,0000 of the 40,0000 who used it daily would be coming home late to their families. 3/4 of all families had a parent usually the father that would miss out on time with their children.... This amounted to thousands of hours of people stuck in their cars. 75 million yearly we're losing in average 30 minutes a day in traffic. These were supporters of Robert Moses, people who used to enjoy driving with the wind blowing through their hair. These people we're now coming home frustrated, angry and despondent after sitting in traffic. etc... that's not from the book, but it's an example of the way the author beats a point to death. That quibble aside, it's a great book... But way to long. Narrator was excellent. If you listen close you can actually here the narrator getting older from the start to the end of the book.

Revisado: 11-22-24
This is an example of government overreacting. This wasn't the first time and won't be the last. I think the group leader John Africa was interesting . But the group members were likely horrible neighbors With Very confrontational instincts. I couldn't help but think of a line from a Dylan song. The author did a good job providing context and balance. This audiobook highlights my theory that Black people in general have superior quick response intelligence. Arguably a survival trait. "Do you need a hearing aid" was the best part of the book. This is a great series . Production quality is excellent!

For centuries, works of art have been stolen in countless ways from all over the world, but no one has been quite as successful at it as the master thief Stéphane Breitwieser. Carrying out more than two hundred heists over nearly eight years—in museums and cathedrals all over Europe—Breitwieser, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout, stole more than three hundred objects, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion.
