Very enjoyable. Loved the setting, during the time if Elizabeth and the Hanseatic League, which I hadn’t known much until this book.
Some interesting twists and turns.

One of my favorites!
Revisado: 07-17-23
I read this just after it was released in the 70’s and often again. The flavor of the story is so different from many books out today.
Woodiwiss had a way with words, descriptions of what her hero and heroine felt, that went way beyond a bedroom. She also paid attend to the period and the clothing when laying out her tale.
A worthy read.

Great read!
Revisado: 07-14-23
The forward was well done - it’s interesting how the classics are so accepted in literature yet some reading these books now, especially the early ones, don’t understand that we, in a way, are getting new classics.
The writing of the time — 1979 — is stylized in portraying an era’s flavors, and written in a permissiveness that won’t be seen by writers in 2023. For all that, the books descriptions handling of sex is tame and discreet and still let the reader’s imagination take control.
The story is beautiful with wonderful prose and and a rich story line. You find yourself laughing and crying, for the characters and for yourself.
The author truly wrote a great story!

Such memories!
Revisado: 07-11-23
I read this back in 1972 when it first came out and it opened a whole new world for me. Back in the day, we called them “bodice busters”.
But it was so different than the regency romances. This was a great story — the narrator was great, and the story has withstood the test of time. Although the story contains certain themes considered reprehensible, yet the way it is written the reader knows there is a happily ever after.

Tragedy has struck the Bennet sisters but they are greatly relieved when the anonymous kindness of a stranger means that they can remain together. In exchange for such charity, a monthly letter is required from each sister. It is a fortunate thing that Miss Elizabeth Bennet rather likes letter-writing, for she relishes the opportunity to relate to this unknown gentleman all her impressions and opinions regarding her changed circumstances.

Too ponderous
Revisado: 06-01-23
Just too many twists and turns. Too many times where actions made no sense. Darcy has a pistol which he didn’t use. Twice.
Plot turns that don’t make sense. The story just dragged. Stilted language. Why would Elizabeth willingly walk off with the villain?

It could have been so much more
Revisado: 05-30-23
The story dragged. There were points brought up such as Elizabeth’s grief and decline that didn’t seem to make sense and didn’t pull through the story. She was unhappy but didn’t know why. — maybe because she was already in love with Darcy?
Story dragged in places and in others dropped plot arcs.
