With extraordinary access to the West Wing, Michael Wolff reveals what happened behind-the-scenes in the first nine months of the most controversial presidency of our time in Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House. Since Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States, the country—and the world—has witnessed a stormy, outrageous, and absolutely mesmerizing presidential term that reflects the volatility and fierceness of the man elected Commander-in-Chief.

American Horror Story
Revisado: 01-07-18
Mostly retreads palace intrigue stories and things everyone knows about the general amateur-night state of the place. But there are some gems in there for the snowflakes.
What will shock normal people is their raw contempt for the importance of what they’re involved in, and the public they know nothing about. Because even if you assumed they were in it for themselves, to see how that translates into actual words and actions is mortifying. Worst of all is their horror at winning, and the realization that all their plans for monetizing the lost election had been derailed by the unthinkable.
Trump himself had planned to spend his time attacking Hilary, claiming he was the real president, playing golf and tweeting. It seems he was the only person who followed through on his post election plans, even after the result went wrong.

Historia
On a sunny May morning in 1998 in Cortez, Colorado, three desperados in a stolen truck opened fire on the town cop, shooting him 20 times; then they blasted their way past dozens of police cars and disappeared into 10,000 square miles of the harshest wilderness terrain on the North American continent. Self-trained survivalists, the outlaws eluded the most sophisticated law enforcement technology on the planet and a pursuit force that represented more than 75 local, state, and federal police agencies with dozens of SWAT teams, U.S. Army Special Forces....

Great writing. But a story with no twist.
Revisado: 07-02-17
It's so well written. Very much in the vein of Eric Larson. Winding together the hunters and hunted, with real skill. But ultimately, these guys shot a cop, went on the lam and that's it. There's no final show down, no nothing. But again, it's so well written I would recommend it all the same.

Historia
A biting satire about a young man's isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, Paul Beatty's The Sellout showcases a comic genius at the top of his game. It challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality: the black Chinese restaurant.

Well performed. More New Yorker joke than story.
Revisado: 12-23-16
It's never quite the story you want. It's the literary version of a story that might be best told another way. He doesn't really reinstate slavery or segregation, so you don't get to actually feel it play out. But the characters are well conceived and it's funny. It's also beautifully read, so it's a pleasure to listen to.

Historia
In Alan Partridge: Nomad, Alan dons his boots, windcheater and scarf and embarks on an odyssey through a place he once knew - it's called Britain - intent on completing a journey of immense personal significance. Diarising his ramble in the form of a 'journey journal', Alan details the people and places he encounters, ruminates on matters large and small and, on a final leg fraught with danger, becomes not a man (because he was one to start off with) but a better, more inspiring example of a man.

Vintage Partridge
Revisado: 11-03-16
You have to admire how many ways Steve Coogan has found to bring Partridge to life. In Nomad we find Alan attempting to complete the journey that his father never could, a walk to Dungeness A through a somewhat unscenic Kent. If Kent is the Garden of England, I wouldn't want to see it's derelict allotment.
Fair warning that the laughs thin out as the book goes on. The first third is so funny I often laughed outloud, but much like Alan, he can't quite keep the pace up all the way through.
But make no mistake, the weakest chapter is funnier than anything else I've had read to me this year.

Historia
Between 1980 and 1988 on BBC television and radio, the exploits of the Rt Hon Jim Hacker MP (Paul Eddington) - later Prime Minister - kept the British nation enthralled. Helped - and hampered - by his diligent Permanent Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby (Nigel Hawthorne) and his Principle Private Secretary Bernard Woolley (Derek Fowlds), Hacker and his department became synonymous with government bureaucracy and administrative double dealing.

Historia
The Scopes trial, over the right to teach evolution in public schools, reaffirmed the importance of intellectual freedom as codified in the Bill of Rights. The trial, in a small-town Tennessee courtroom in 1925, set the stage for ongoing national debates over the separation of church and state in a democratic society - debates that continue to this day.

Listening to a bit of history
- De Stephen en 07-22-09
Well done. If not spectacular.
Revisado: 09-18-16
The story you know, told better by Inherit the Wind.
Purists will point to the authenticity and accuracy of this version, but the truth is duller than fiction. The main problem is the absence of any characterization of the defendant, leaving the tired old tic-tac-toe of 'science vs religion' to carry the whole thing. And given how far this argument has moved in the last century, this version seems basic when it needs to feel controversial.
It's well acted and keeps its pace. Well worth listening to, but you will find the real characters less interesting than the fictional versions you already know.

Abby Mann's classic story about the Nuremberg trials, under which German leaders were found guilty of crimes against humanity in 1945 and 1946. Even today, the play remains a shattering indictment of the consequences of unchecked authority and the seductive power of group thought.

A terrible question for us all
Revisado: 09-17-16
While it occasionally hurries through elements upon which the film version lingers, this does nothing to detract from the overall story and its consequences, which are well acted here with the strength and subtlety that the writing deserves.
With the monsters of the Nazi high command gone, attention shifts to the upper ranks of the reich's civil infrastructure, where judges carried out the legal dirty work individually, hanging and sterilizing anyone who violated the laws of the new Germany.
But this is really the trial of the German people. Who knew what and what could they be reasonably expected to do? What's the difference between making a law and following a law?
Ultimately, this puts the audience on trial. We are all asked to reflect on ourselves and what we might have done, faced with a straight choice between complicity in the slaughter or our own deaths.
Would we really have behaved differently? Generations of Germans will face this question. Thanks to this play, the rest of us will too. And we must.

Not the best AC, but still good.
Revisado: 09-14-16
A complex narrative that doesn't lend itself to this format. You need the time that only reading can give you, or the visual of film.
But it's nice background listening, and Hugh Fraser is so good as a reader.

More high quality narration from Hugh Fraser. Like The Pale Horse, this can be hard to stick with. It is inaccessible at times relative to the rest of the pantheon. But it's worth staying with it. Enjoy.

Historia
When an elderly priest is murdered, the killer searches the victim so roughly that his already ragged cassock is torn in the process. What was the killer looking for? And what had a dying woman confided to the priest on her deathbed only hours earlier? Mark Easterbrook and his sidekick, Ginger Corrigan, are determined to find out. Maybe the three women who run The Pale Horse public house - and who are rumored to practice the "Dark Arts" - can provide some answers....

A tricky one, but very well delivered
Revisado: 07-29-16
One of the less accessible AC's in my opinion. No Marple or Poirot to help you through. And more importantly, no Captain Hastings to have it all explained slowly on your behalf. And unlike Sparkling Cyanide (also done very well in this series) where the characters and setting are quite tight and manageable, this sprawling epic is hard to keep track of in audiobook form. Especially if your attentions are on the cooking or the driving.
Hugh Fraser's performance is as excellent as always. He does women so well. Important for AC obviously.
Enjoy. Worth every penny.
