I've loved this story since I was very young, but the singsong way the author narrates it is jarring and uncomfortable to listen to as an adult.

The first one was a fun read because it was about a guy learning to survive and overcome the challenges of a familiar world. This one is about that same guy getting stripped of most of his agency and becoming a sidekick to a Strong Female Character. It's not as preachy as it might have been, but whereas the "lessons" in the first book were rules of survival and general common sense, this book really stepped up the social commentary with "this reminds me of a problem we have back in the real world..." I don't need to be lectured about religious tolerance by a Minecraft novelization.

That said, it was still a moderately entertaining read. It's always fun seeing Minecraft picked apart and dissected, and this book does pretty well with that. Unfortunately, whereas the first book was all about discovery and innovation, this book is all about being shown the answers by someone who already knows. And boy, Summer is the worst. "I'm not gonna tell you anything about what's going to happen to help you prepare. Hey, why don't you know this? I can't always take care of you!" She's already done everything and she's just flat out better at literally everything than our narrator, except being a good friend and sometimes, critical thinking. She's also condescending and seemed self absorbed at times. I don't like her.

Anyway, I'll still probably read the next one, but I wasn't super impressed with this one.

Half narration, half clunky expository dialogue. Just read the book. Not nearly as good as the more original Dark Adventure Radio Theater productions.

There's a lot to love about this book, and also q lot of cringe. some of the cringe is perfect for reminding you that the protagonist is 16 years old. Some of it is just bad writing. For me, a lot of it is the obnoxious philosophy that the author uses this work as a vessel for at times.

The performance is mostly good but I HATE his take on dragons.

I enjoyed this book. It fits right in with a lot of other books I like, and it was a fun read. The worldbuilding seems very internally consistent and shows a lot of thought put into it. Everything feels earned and grounded and it all works harmoniously.

That said, this is supposed to be the 21st century Lord of the Rings, and it simply isn't. The characters are not very interesting or distinct, and the author's youth really shows through them. In particular, I often noticed that characters with wildly different backgrounds and personalities who had never met ended up thinking the exact same things for the exact same reasons, which really broke the immersion and made me feel like the author simply hadn't realized that the king of an inhuman race might draw different conclusions and think differently than a human farm boy.

As a side note, this narrator is great at making the characters distinct in their voices, but his voice for Sapphira sounds like a middle schooler doing a voice for a cartoony monster in a half-assed puppet show. It totally threw me out of the story every time she spoke. I get that she's a large animal and would have a deep, growling voice, but she doesn't speak with her voice, she speaks in thought. Very bad decision for a main character there.
