...Disturbing...
Revisado: 10-20-19
As this story unfolds, it produces a feeling that unspeakable horror looms just around the corner. As indeed it does. Although riddled with grief and loss, this is not just a story of grief and loss.Superimposed onto this common theme are very well developed and plausible characters with a myriad of unmet needs. This is a book that challenges the reader to close the book halfway through or like a mesmerizing roadside accident watch until the end.

Historia
The study of Western Civilization traditionally follows a well-known but incomplete arc: the grand achievements of Greece and Rome, several hundred years of the Dark Ages, and then the bright emergence of the European Renaissance. But amid the "dark" Middle Ages, the Abbasid Empire, which ruled the Middle East as well as much of Northern Africa and Central Asia from 750 to 1258, serves as a vitally important but often overlooked bridge between the ancient and modern worlds.

...Staggering...
Revisado: 10-19-19
Narrated with demonstrable enthusiasm and a rich, pleasing voice is this tremendous compendium of Islamic accomplishments over time. The breadth and depth of topics discussed is profound. As if representing the largest world-wide empire in history is not enough, Islam touched, molded, affected and explored everything in its' pathway. This encompassed areas from astronomy to medicine, from art forms to mathematics, from calligraphy to minarets leaving a mark on everything.Islamic influence stretched towards excellence.Of special intrigue was the establishment of Baghdad's House of Wisdom. This was the attempt to consolidate all known knowledge into Arabic. This seems in great contrast to today's devaluation of contemporary knowledge. This course expands the understanding of Islamic contribution and makes known characteristics of Islam more commendable than the patriarchy, terror and cruelty that often spring to mind today. This course also reminds us that religious wars are rooted in antiquity and teaches us of things lost and found between the battles. It is truly staggering in its' implications. I loved it!

Eloquent, pivotal, timely, ....and touching!
Revisado: 10-04-19
Melinda Gates,co=founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, shares her views on the role pf philanthropy in decreasing ills in the world of today. She is enthusiastic as she discusses the need for evidence-based decision making, full participation of the projects hosts, the crucial need for periodic re-evaluation, the need to assess the appropriateness of the project, and the willingness to accept some degree of risk. She ponders ethics and morality in the face of religions directives, past and present.
Mrs.Gates poignantly illustrates why the empowerment of women has become a major focus of the foundation. She takes us on her travels to the fringes of impoverished societies across the world. She teaches us of what she has learned...from the puzzles of patriarchy to blunt and subtle gender bias.and the potential for contraception to be a key player in enhancing the lives of so many on the fringes. No reader will close the book untouched.

Historia
Democracies can die with a coup d'état - or they can die slowly. This happens most deceptively when in piecemeal fashion, with the election of an authoritarian leader, the abuse of governmental power and the complete repression of opposition. All three steps are being taken around the world - not least with the election of Donald Trump - and we must all understand how we can stop them.

Required Reading!!!
Revisado: 07-20-18
Absolutely required reading for anyone trying to understand the muddle of today's politics. This book is the play-book for the fall of democracy and rise of authoritarianism. Ii is specific in the description of how one form of government morphs into the other....step by step.It is astoundingly easy to follow how the U.S.A. has been and is embroiled in this worrying pathway. The author discusses reasons why and how this is happening enabling the reader to keep a mental track of where we were and where we are heading. There is however a disturbance in realizing there is "method to the madness" instead of lingering in the innocent belief that it must surely be random chaos. It allows some semblance of "getting a grip" as opposed to succumbing to panic.

Poignant and Timely
Revisado: 07-05-18
Written in 2009,this story is profoundly relevant to today's moral climate.Despite that,it is truly romantic and full of friendship. How the reader is engaged in a mystery that includes immigration, women's rights, teen angst, poverty, child abuse, religion, quilting, promises, migrant work, bilingualism, good food and prejudice is amazing. Without a doubt, I will eagerly reread and enjoy again this marvelous book.

Read it twice...back to back!!!
Revisado: 12-28-17
Searching for a Rosamunde Pilcher read-a-like,I stumbled on this.I was hooked at once by wonderful descriptions of Scotland and characters with a love of books and simplified style of life. That the characters loved animals is a huge bonus. My favorite parts include description of festival goings on.....complete with kilts and bodhrans...as well as the main characters Herriot-like rescue. I felt like I was there, and wanted to be!.

Eastern Europe has long been thought of as the "Other Europe", a region rife with political upheaval, shifting national borders, an astonishing variety of ethnic diversity, and relative isolation from the centers of power in the West. It has also been, and continues to be, pivotal in the course of world events. A History of Eastern Europe offers a sweeping 1,000-year tour with a particular focus on the region's modern history.

A vast undertaking!
Revisado: 11-15-17
In spite of the tremendous amount of material and great complexities in the relationships f the countries f Eastern Europe the reader was able to grab and keep my attention. The material was completely unfamiliar to me as I just have never thought about this area and virtually know nothing about it. His style of presentation is very organized which helped me to follow the scenarios well.I see that it will have a definite contribution to my understanding of world events in the news. I particularly was interested in the relationship between Russia and the Ukraine.

These women writers of life and love in the English countryside make me wish I was there! From perceptive details in entangled relationships, to endearing descriptions of children and the local dogs she entwined her plot of the dance in cozy, approachable narrative that includes the reader because the descriptions are so vivid you can see them. Troublesome, difficult matters are handled with refreshing honesty,.....perhaps better than an average person might attempt.

Maps have a mysterious hold over us. Whether ancient, crumbling parchments or generated by Google, maps tell us things we want to know, not only about our current location or where we are going but about the world in general. And yet, when it comes to geo-politics, much of what we are told is generated by analysts and other experts who have neglected to refer to a map of the place in question.

Just immense!
Revisado: 06-07-17
This reading gives substantial indication of just how large and overwhelming this project was. It is mind boggling! The only distraction was the repetitiveness of descriptions of living conditions, illness and racial issues encountered. The project management seemed to have changed many times and a bit of that seemed difficult to understand. Function of the canal was well described. It was fun to listen to as I have been through the canal and along Side the Darien jungle.
