The penultimate volume in John Jakes’s stirring Kent Family Chronicles finds America booming in its postwar prosperity. With this newly secured peace comes an opportunity for the Kent family to reconcile and to thrive, both personally and financially. Gideon Kent takes up his father’s vow to reunite the family, but when he brings his father’s widow back into the fold, the repercussions seem insurmountable.

Fine historical fiction
Revisado: 01-11-25
I listened to the first volume last year but had a hard time remembering the characters at the start of this volume. I did find it a bit hard to keep track of the various Morland cousins, nephews etc. But having read quite a lot about the reign of King Henry VIII, I didn't find the story involving him and his queens particularly compelling or newly told. Overall, though the book was fine.

I got caught up in this story right from the start. But the middle sagged especially when they were on the cross Atlantic ship. The narration was good.

D-Day is approaching. They don’t know where or when, but the Germans know it’ll be soon, and for Felicity "Flick" Clariet, the stakes have never been higher. A senior agent in the ranks of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) responsible for sabotage, Flick has survived to become one of Britain’s most effective operatives in Northern France. She knows that the Germans’ ability to thwart the Allied attack depends upon their lines of communications, and in the days before the invasion, no target is of greater strategic importance than the largest telephone exchange in Europe.

Great thriller
Revisado: 12-30-24
I really enjoyed this fast-paced novel that unfolds over an 8 day time frame right before D-Day. I've read Follet's more recent historical fiction series and I liked this book just as much. The narrator for the version I have which I purchased in 2024 was Kate Reading, not the two listed above.

Historia
Washington City, 1864. One has to be careful with talk of secession, of Confederate whispers falling on Northern ears. Better to speak only when in the company of the trustworthy, like Mrs. Surratt. A widow who runs a small boardinghouse on H Street, Mary Surratt isn't half as committed to the cause as her son, Johnny. If he's not delivering messages or escorting veiled spies, he's inviting home men like John Wilkes Booth, an actor who is even more charming in person than he is on the stage.

Disappointing
Revisado: 12-24-24
This story is told from the viewpoints of Mary Suratt herself and one of her young boarders, Nora. Nora's ambition to work in an office and her infatuation with Booth doesn't add much to the story. Mary moans about life's hardships and her bad marriage and shiftless son. Just wasn't an engaging story with these unlikeable characters.

Historia
December, 1864. The 60,000 strong army of General William Tecumseh Sherman has swept it's way through the south, burning Atlanta on its march to the sea. Next in line, the city of Savannah, which Sherman intends to capture as a Christmas present for Abraham Lincoln. When old "Uncle Billy", as Sherman is affectionately called by his troops, rolls into town, he meets his match in the form of 12 year old Miss Hattie-Harriet Lester, a "damned little rebel" who tells it like she sees it.

Meh...
Revisado: 12-21-24
I've truly enjoyed all the John Jakes' books I've listened to but this one is a dud. Perhaps the problem is that this is an abridged book which I did not realize until I cued it up to play. I don't even understand the purpose of abridged books and would certainly not knowlngly purchase any. The book unfolds over a short period of time and there's not much character development. the main character is a spunky pre-teen. Do not recommend.

Part love story, part historical epic, part tragedy, The House of Special Purpose illuminates an empire at the end of its reign. Living in England with his beloved wife, Zoya, Georgy prepares to make one final journey back to the Russia he once knew and loved, the Russia that both destroyed and defined him. As Georgy remembers days gone by, we are transported to Saint Petersburg, to the Winter Palace of the tzar, in the early twentieth century - a time of change, threat, and bloody revolution.

This was a superb book that had me hooked from the beginning. The narrative unfolds through flashbacks and current time, gradually revealing secrets. This is my third John Boyne novel and they have all been excellent. He is truly a stand-out author. The narrator was excellent as well.

Historia
Eugenie Bearhani (1760-1835) was born in Calcutta, raised in Haiti, and brought as a servant - a free woman of color - to America by an English officer on the eve of the American Revolution. Yet none of that prepared Eugenie for her next employer: Colonel Aaron Burr, who some whispered had made a pact with the devil. The lines between master and servant soon tangle and blur, and first attraction becomes dangerous obsession. Many historians deny she even existed, but she and the children she bore to Burr were very real - so was her little-known marriage to America's first true villain.

Revisado: 12-08-24
I just loved this book, tough as the subject matter was. I've listened to 70 books this year and this is my favorite fiction book. Frankie's experiences both during and after the war are so expertly and realistically portrayed. Julia Whelan, as always, is a superb narrator.
