Historia
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Just … Wow.
Revisado: 11-10-24
This book was a great story even if it wasn’t important but it was also important.
Whether or not we agree with the government’s decision to go to war at the beginning or in retrospect, those that serve honorably deserve our gratitude and respect.
This book advances that honor, gratitude and respect.

Historia
When twenty-five-year-old Judith Jones began working as a secretary at Doubleday’s Paris office in 1949, she spent most of her time wading through manuscripts in the slush pile and passing on projects—until one day, a book caught her eye. She read it in one sitting, then begged her boss to consider publishing it. A year later, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl became a bestseller. It was the start of a culture-defining career in publishing. Legendary editor Judith Jones finally gets her due in this intimate biography.

An Amazing Life
Revisado: 06-21-24
Look, I’m not gonna pretend as if this person was a saint or a miracle worker or without flaws. Of course, this is a biography written by someone who was impressed by her as I was when I started to hear about her through other works of fiction and nonfiction.
What struck me about Judith Bailey Jones is that she was a wonderful and amazing person and very much a flawed human being.
She had her own way of dealing with people and getting out of them the best that she could, and I am sure most of the authors that worked under her and with her benefited from her help and guidance, however, gentle and however, leading from behind.
I have read some of the other of this book that cast her in a less flattering light, but wouldn’t we all suffer from the harsh light of Inquisition? I am glad that I read this book and I am glad to know all the peoples lives that she touched and all the joy that she took in life. I hope you enjoy reading it too.

Such a surprise
Revisado: 04-30-24
This book was one of the selections for our monthly Book CLub. I do enjoy murder mysteries, but this one had a number of little twists that really made it quite delightful. The performance was also spot on and the writing was very accessible, but not too simple. I hope you enjoy.

Historia
Part memoir, part history, Burn Book is a necessary chronicle of tech’s most powerful players. This is the inside story we’ve all been waiting for about modern Silicon Valley and the biggest boom in wealth creation in the history of the world. When tech titans crowed that they would “move fast and break things,” Kara Swisher was moving faster and breaking news. While covering the explosion of the digital sector in the early 1990s, she developed a long track record of digging up and reporting the facts about this new world order.

I love this perspective
Revisado: 03-28-24
To my embarrassment I only recently heard of this author. I saw her on a talkshow in which she was being interviewed about this book being born in the 60s and growing up in the 80s and 90s. I am a child of tech myself and really loved a lot of her opinions and her history and I really enjoyed the book.
Her writing/conversation style is easy to read and listen to.
I thought it was just perfect if I didn’t always agree with her opinions

Historia
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

This book was everything it promised
Revisado: 02-16-23
I saw the author on a television interview. I like the sound of his voice.I like the way that he spoke.
I’m not usually one to fall for “best sellers” as they are often disappointing.
This man writes like the Flaubert of modern literature. The words that he uses to describe things are very unique and very accurate in building a particular ambience.
I was sorry to see this book end, but better to have it, end wanting more.
I will be purchasing the other books from this author as he is amazing and I can’t wait to see what else he has come up with .

Historia
In the waning months of World War II, young Evelyn Roe's life is transformed when she finds what she takes to be a badly burned soldier, all but completely buried in the heavy red-clay soil on her family's farm in North Carolina. When Evelyn rescues the stranger, it quickly becomes clear he is not a simple man. As innocent as a newborn, he recovers at an unnatural speed, and then begins to change - first into Evelyn's mirror image, and then into her complement, a man she comes to know as Adam.

A bit trite
Revisado: 06-12-22
This story seems to be a perfectly nice love story that serves as a fable that the love and connection are more important than the origin or homogeneity of the partner.
The narrator was excellent and the reading/listening was easy, but the story got Pollyanna and trite just when it might have gone into more weighty and serious areas.
I’m not sorry I read it and I did finish it, but ultimately I had hoped for a less tame book.

Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

The perfect book for anyone who’s ever had a mother
Revisado: 02-20-22
Having grown up in the New York City area, Flushing adjacent, I witnessed the influx of Koreans over the last several decades.
The combination of the little bits of culture to which I was exposed, especially black bean noodles, and the universal story of the love and challenges that are common to mothers and daughters made this a beautiful book.
The symbolism of the kimchi that is threaded throughout the entire book is wonderful.
Michelle’s narration of her own story is also beautifully done.
I would recommend this book to anyone.
