Historia
It’s the 1960s in North Carolina, and Lorraine Delford has it all—an upstanding family, a perfect boyfriend, and an idyllic home complete with a white picket fence. Yet every time she looks through her father’s telescope, she dreams of leaving it all behind to go to space. It’s ambitious, but Lorraine has always been exceptional.

A snapshot of unwed motherhood in the ‘60s
Revisado: 04-01-25
Could not stop listening!
As an Ohio nursing major in the early 70’s, I visited a Florence Crittenten Home for Unwed Mothers. This book brought back the memory and the question if the happy dorm like atmosphere had a darker element. The majority of mothers were white and almost all gave over their infants to Catholic Charities for adoption. Of the few black residents, most took their babies home. Looking back, there was a hint of racial judgment.
The home closed shortly thereafter owing to the changes in social attitudes.
The novel’s cruelty by the house mother, the baby’s father and Lorraine’s parents was a bit too heavy handed. But no doubt social norms for unwed mothers were harsh in the 60’s.
Maybe it was because I wanted a well deserved happy ending, but the epilogue was rushed and very unsatisfying.
Nevertheless, I am going to recommend this to my bookclub.

Historia
For as long as historical records have existed, authoritarian regimes have tried to rewrite history to suit their purposes, using their dictatorial powers to create myths, spread propaganda, justify decisions, erase opponents, and even dispose of crimes. Today, as America’s Republican Party becomes increasingly radicalized, it’s not surprising to see the GOP read from a similarly despotic script. Indeed, the party is taking dangerous, aggressive steps to rewrite history—and not just from generations past.

Short but a powerful telling of the manipulation of truth in the Trump era. Read by Rachel Maddow.
Unfortunately, the Americans who need this presentation of truth and reality will never listen nor read this.

Historia
Everyone in my family has killed someone. Some of us, the high achievers, have killed more than once. I’m not trying to be dramatic, but it is the truth. Some of us are good, others are bad, and some just unfortunate. I’m Ernest Cunningham. Call me Ern or Ernie. I wish I’d killed whoever decided our family reunion should be at a ski resort, but it’s a little more complicated than that.

Historia
We congratulate ourselves when we resist the donut in the office breakroom. We celebrate our restraint when we hold back from sending an email in anger. We feel virtuous when we wake up at dawn to get a jump on the day. We put others’ needs ahead of our own and believe this makes us exemplary. In On Our Best Behavior, journalist Elise Loehnen explains that these impulses—often lauded as unselfish, distinctly feminine instincts—are actually ingrained in us by a culture that reaps the benefits, via an extraordinarily effective collection of mores known as the Seven Deadly Sins.

Navel gazing, victimhood with some insight
Revisado: 11-30-23
I metaphorically rolled my eyes hundred time listening to this book. It is full of intense navel gazing and victimhood. But sandwiched in there are some interesting insights that I found thought provoking. Her historical references and personal experiences are the best part of the book. However, it could have used some serious editorial cuts. After listening, a Google search revealed that the author is associated with Gwyneth Paltrow’s goofy Goop business. That explains a lot.

Historia
With a disarming mix of charm and Tammany-hewn toughness, Rosenberg began her career in public relations in 1920s Manhattan. As FDR's unofficial adviser, Rosenberg soon wielded enormous influence—no less potent for being subtle. Her extraordinary career continued after his death. By 1950, she was tapped to become the assistant secretary of defense—the highest position ever held by a woman in the US military—prompting Senator Joe McCarthy to wage an unsuccessful smear campaign against her.

Every minute of this Audio is interesting
Revisado: 08-03-23
If you are a 20th century history buff, you will love this biography. Every chapter was immensely interesting and the narration was just right.
I don’t recall ever hearing about Anna Rosenberg but she deserves a prominent place in American history.
While, I am fairly well read about the 30s, 40s, 50s and early 60s, there were more than a few tidbits in the book I had never known. I especially loved that Anna was a clever and brilliant woman who had such impact in a traditionally man’s world and in American history.

Started so strong but fell flat
Revisado: 06-21-23
I had such high hopes for the story line at the beginning of this book. The premise was intriguing and it could have been a great story,
I had some sympathy for the main character but she was NOT likable. It was hard to understand why all the other characters were so in love with her.
The author tried to include one too
many plot twists. The last one was just plain goofy.
On the other hand, the narrator was great.

It found myself laughing all thru this Audible book. I am decades older than the protagonist but her hip language and witty take on her life as a mother, friend and teacher is delightful.
Her reaction to Weight Watcher weigh ins and helicopter kindergarten parents is a hoot. The narrator did a superb job,

Great ghost story that is out dated
Revisado: 02-02-23
Great fast paced story with a rather unlikable heroine who is constantly being saved by a man. I was shocked that this was not written in the 1950s. I love a good ghost story and Charleston but there is an undertone I found a bit annoying.
The heroine’s noble deed is giving a ill gotten gift to the Daughters of the Confederacy, an organization now viewed as a major promoter of the South’s Lost Cause Myth that has promoted racism. Ouch, Karen White! Not charming. Creepy and outdated.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Delightful and fresh
Revisado: 11-30-22
When my friend recommended a book with a aquarium octopus as one of the 3 main characters, I thought, “yuck”! I was so pleasantly surprised by this unique and clever book. The whimsy of a super intelligent octopus adds a fresh note to a story about two damaged, yet nicely likable people. If a octopus had a voice, it would be identical to that of the narrator in this Audible book.
