Historia
This is a story about young men who learned to play baseball during the 1930s and 1940s, and then went on to play for one of the most exciting major-league ball clubs ever fielded, the team that broke the color barrier with Jackie Robinson. It is a story by and about a sportswriter who grew up near Ebbets Field, and who had the good fortune in the 1950s to cover the Dodgers for the Herald Tribune. This is the story about what happened to the team when their glory days were behind them.

Sure it’s got sports in it, but it’s mostly about fascinating people and a fascinating time, beautifully told and beautifully read

This is a gem of a novel, perfect for our moment in history, and extremely well performed. I kept delaying reading the final chapter, because I didn’t want it to end.

Historia
This stunning, exquisitely written collection introduces a cast of remarkable characters whose lives intersect in ways both life-affirming and heartbreaking. A 1930s Soviet censor painstakingly corrects offending photographs deep underneath Leningrad, bewitched by the image of a disgraced prima ballerina. A chorus of women recount their stories and those of their grandmothers, former gulag prisoners who settled their Siberian mining town. Two pairs of brothers share a fierce, protective love.

An astonishing work
Revisado: 01-29-16
I did not know what to expect from this book but I'm deeply grateful that I listened to it. Beautifully constructed, with characters so real that they frustrated you half the time (as people do), and with a finish so moving and wise that I had to listen to it again several times. I do like books of interlocking stories such as Elizabeth Strout's, as well as stories with international settings. But those are only incidental pleasures to a beautifully crafted work with so much to appreciate moment by moment.

Historia
As a well-paid war correspondent, Stephen Crane was shipwrecked en route to Cuba in early 1897. He and a small party of passengers spent 30 hours adrift off the coast of Florida, an experience that Crane would later transform into this, his most famous short story, in 1898.

Worth hearing again
Revisado: 09-15-15
I first read The Open Boat in college and only remembered that I was astonished when I first read it. I'm so glad that Audible offered it, because it was as astonishing the second time, 50 years later. There is real wisdom in this story, and beauty as well.

Historia
As the summer of 2004 draws to a close, Archy Stallings and Nat Jaffe are still hanging in there - longtime friends, bandmates, and co-regents of Brokeland Records, a kingdom of used vinyl located in the borderlands of Berkeley and Oakland. Their wives, Gwen Shanks and Aviva Roth-Jaffe, are the Berkeley Birth Partners, a pair of semi-legendary midwives who have welcomed, between them, more than a thousand newly minted citizens into the dented utopia at whose heart - half tavern, half temple - stands Brokeland Records.

An extraordinary novel, perfectly read.
Revisado: 10-30-12
What made the experience of listening to Telegraph Avenue the most enjoyable?
The characters are rich; the plot held my interest through all the twists and turns; the unique setting of the East Bay is perfectly captured in ways large and small; the descriptions of jazz are marvelous; the dark side of Oakland politics was portrayed better than any journalist has done. Clarke Peters' reading is so marvelous that I can't imagine just reading the book; my wife got used to me plugging my iPod into our stereo each evening saying "You've got to listen this this."

A must read
Revisado: 03-31-07
I have read Heart of Darkness several times over the years, but never enjoyed it more than through this AudioBook. I can't compare this version to the others in Audible's collection, but I can say with certainty that this is one of the great short novels in the Western lexicon. It never fails to grip, yet as its title suggests, goes deeper and deeper in theme as it moves up the Congo. It is also surprising, and a little horrifying, how relevant it still is today. I found myself re-listening to several pages over and over, then playing them for my wife as well.
