I've never liked horror movies and that's what this one feels like. The two villains are nightmare inducing monsters. I can take blood and guts, but this one makes my skin crawl. Maybe that's what most readers like. It's well written and engaging. I'll see it through to the end.
But ugh. I really can't stand the narration for the voices of Cross, the kids, and Nanna Mamma. It's really insulting for a professional and his family. Alex has a fake southern accent which doesn't ring true fo someone born and raised in DC. And Nanna sounds like some kind of old house maid.
This series needs a good, consistent narrator. I see that the next narrator is Kramer. Let's see how that goes.

I loved Hannah's The Great Alone and expected something similarly riveting and intense. This one is a little too syrupy sweet for my taste. That said, I couldn't stop listening. I kept expecting something to get in the way of a "Happy Ever After" ending. But...spoiler alert....nothing did.

Just not my genre. But I have a couple of friends to whom I'll recommend this for a good summer read.

I think my love affair with Reacher is finished

My husband and I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the Jack Reacher books. ALL OF THEM...until this one.
The qualities that gave the Reacher character depth....his vulnerabilities, sensitivities, injuries, flawed insights....are missing. Instead we have super-hero Reacher who never needs so much as a band-aid, is always correct, and "says nothing" so often that you wonder how people around him can take him seriously.
We miss the Reacher who mourned for his brother and his mother, who fell in and out of relationships, who bandaged his own nose with duct-tape, and who nearly died at the hands of two terrorist women.
Maybe Marvel Comic Books would be a good home for the new Reacher who, I'm sure, leaps buildings with a single bound.
We're hunting for a new series to love like we loved this one.

I love this series for the great characters, the detail, the relationship between Cormoran and Robin, and the suspense. But this one is way too long with way too many inconsequential details. I wished I had purchased the Kindle version so that I could better look back for details about characters. The ending was good....logical without being a dead give-away. We knew it wouldn't be Dennis the serial killer. That would have been too obvious. But there were so many characters with plausible motives. They just saturated the book with possibilities. I look forward to the next book in the series. Let's hope it is a bit more compact and concise!

I wanted to like this book since I am a huge Hemingway fan and I always welcome more insights into his life, his relationships, his character. But I can't imagine him as this flat, uninspiring character depicted here. And Marty comes across as an endlessly whining wide-eyed star-struck ingenue who dreams of making it big in the world of letters.

I read the Paris Wife and loved it. I hoped for more of the same. But Hemingway has lost his appeal in this book.

The narrator reads with a striving, breathless tone that becomes all too predictable as the chapters unfold.

Half way through, and I'm going to put this one aside.

Joe Pickett is one of my favorite characters. In this book he emerges as a very human, very conflicted man. While his strength of character rings true, we now see him as a flawed man. Somehow that makes him more believable and appealing.

I like David Chandler's reading....just right for this western setting and its varied characters. .

At first I was a little put off by the gee-whiz, Norman Rockwell flavor of this one. But young Donnie won me over with his innocent charm...and later by his toughness and resilience in the face of big setbacks. He and Herman forged a bond that was at times joyful and at times poignant. Great characters kept appearing on the scene. The narrator was perfect for the role. Stick with this one. It delivers a memorable experience.

So many wonderful, charming, and satisfying short stories....each one unique with a unifying device....a keyboard. In some stories it plays a central role, in others it is a mere mention. In all instances, simple characters are beautifully drawn and animated to tell the most absorbing tales.

Tom Hanks!! Good grief, how much talent can one person have? His writing is masterful and his reading, no surprise, is superb. This was one of my most enjoyable Audible listens. I hope he will continue to write and read for us.

There is nothing to compare with a "missing child" plot. Nothing more horrible and cringe-worthy. But, that said, this novel kept you in its thrall for the whole ride. The characters were so well developed that by the end, the reader was left with a relationship with each one. I

I wouldn't call this a mystery since the reader learned of the horrible crime just before Lauren, the mother, began putting clues together. The reader had the feeling of helping her and encouraging her as she put it all together. I braced for a terrifying ending involving Floyd and Lauren, but in the end, he did the logical thing. And the reader ended up feeling sad for him.

This is a good listen! I highly recommend it. I liked the reader. She did a good job with all of the voices.

I was talking with another avid Audible subscriber, and we agreed that the quality of the readers has steadily improved. Do you hold auditions?
