This is a highly entertaining mystery for those of us who loved Laurie R. King's Sherlock Holmes series that places the focus on Mary Russell, his mentee, then detective partner, and finally partner in all things. Davies does a splendid job of focusing on a ragamuffin girl who escapes further mistreatment by landing a job as a helper of Mrs Hudson. Little did we know that the celebrated Holmes was not nearly as swift as Dr Watson makes him out to be. Rather, Mrs. Hudson and her helpmeet are "backstage" keeping others safer, solving clues, and placing answers cunningly within reach of supposed Sherlockian genius. This is a keeper! Would love to see more of this series recorded and shared on audible!

A 1934 British mystery with well-drawn characters, witty conversation and a delightful narrator. It took me a little bit to get into the story. But then, it took off. Catherine comes back to Somerville College, only to find a corpse in the college chapel who turns out to be her former professor. While the woman dead had provided a rave review of Catherine's first published book of poetry, it becomes clear that she has engaged in some bitter, predatory behavior. Catherine is surrounded by interesting women friends, long-serving Oxford scouts with noses for evidence, a on-again-off-again fiancé who is just returning from Kenya, a scholar mesmerized by Germanic myth and a male professor who might be miffed Catherine wrote a better biography of a literary figure that he considered his specialty. Between Oxford, London and an airplane trip to an island, the pacing is engaging. Will the solution involve the rising supporters of Hitler in pre-World War II England or a poisonous bit of scholarly skullduggery? For those who wish Dorothy L. Sayer had written more of Harriet Vane. When will Audible produce more of this series?

This story is like a train wreck of grief and impending loss you cannot look away from. It lures you with the island and then tells a story of isolation, with brief glimpses of Vineyard community. Good southern accents. No Island accents. Just grief, haunted by misunderstanding, with mild relief at close.
