Better off being physically read

Although I still have about four hours left in the book, I think I have an opinion solidified. The detailed descriptions and the translation of the hieroglyphs are difficult to follow when listening. I feel like we are missing something with an audio version, and I don't normally say that. There are a couple of mispronnunciations that I caught. Who knows if there are more, but given this is a historical book, I would have imagined that consulting with the authors or other Egyptologists on pronunciations should have happened?

Historia
In the United States, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. Like so many of us, Johann Hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. He tried all sorts of self-help solutions—even abandoning his phone for three months—but nothing seemed to work. So Hari went on an epic journey across the world to interview the leading experts on human attention—and he discovered that everything we think we know about this crisis is wrong.

Excellent Premise, then goes off the rails

I thought it was going to be another Deep Thinking book, ones that explore why we do what we do and why we can't focus, but ultimately this guy's thesis is that it doesn't matter how much you try to limit screen time and focus, ultimately the big tech companies are to blame and the solution is "not" to limit your own time and hold yourself accountable, it's to get policy changes. He basically takes an individual's accountability away. He even uses obesity as an example. "It's not your fault you're obese...you live in a world with processed food. To think it's your fault and you can change means you are priveleged."
While I agree that tech companies design their devices simply to make money and to keep you entangled in their web, his idea that it's more their fault than ours, even if he only says that for a few chapters (if that) is flawed. Tech companies don't care and honestly enough people are entangled that it will be a long, long time before any significant regulations come. The flaw is in human nature itself actually.
I was ultimately disappointed and couldn't finish the book when he started to get really political.

Historia
Cari Beauchamp masterfully combines biography with social and cultural history to examine the lives of Frances Marion and her many female colleagues who shaped filmmaking from the early teens through the 1940s. Frances Marion was Hollywood's highest paid screenwriter - male or female - for almost three decades, wrote almost 200 produced films and remains the only woman to win two Academy Awards for original screenwriting (The Big House and The Champ).
