Historia
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

Intriguing Story, Superior Writing, A+ Narration
Revisado: 09-18-19
This is a captivating spy novel wrapped in a world of rich and vivid writing. Mick Herron's style is so much better than most modern fiction writing. The characters are complex and flawed and surprise you with there ability to overcome their limitations. An unlikely and often unlikable team of misfits relegated to MI-5s B team (slow horses) who have a little left in the tank after all. Gerard Doyle narration is flawless. Could listen to him all day.

A Marathon of Laughs
Revisado: 08-11-18
This was a great listen. Joel’s humour is very crisp and relentless. I was winded a few times during the book. Nicholas’s narration was right on. The book needed someone with comedic timing and he delivered.
So, inspired to try a marathon? I keep asking my legs that question, and so far no response.

Historia
Struggling with working-mother guilt, Marlene Greene hopes a camping trip in the forest will provide quality time with her three young children - until they see fires in the distance, columns of smoke distorting the sweeping view. Overnight, all communication with the outside world is lost. Knowing something terrible has happened, Marlene suspects that the isolation of the remote campsite is all that's protecting her family. But the arrival of a lost boy reveals they are not alone in the woods, and as the unfolding disaster ravages the land, more youngsters seek refuge under her wing.

Not bad but not new enough
Revisado: 04-03-18
This is another take on the disaster story and it has some interesting new ideas but one of the main new focuses is not enough. The concentration on children has its moments but at the end of the day is not that interesting an element. It is a good start for this new author and I hope to see more in the future.
The performance is excellent. Very easy listening and nice tension build up.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to find yourself strapped to a giant rocket that's about to go from zero to 17,500 miles per hour? Or to look back on Earth from outer space and see the surprisingly precise line between day and night? Or to stand in front of the Hubble Space Telescope, wondering if the emergency repair you're about to make will inadvertently ruin humankind's chance to unlock the universe's secrets? Mike Massimino has been there, and in Spaceman he puts you inside the suit.

Inspiring story about guts and perseverance.
Revisado: 04-16-17
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The writing is straightforward and compelling. The topic one of the most interesting there is. I'm glad that Mike Massimino read his own book. Not as polished as a professional reader but know one else could have captured the meaning and emotion as well. This everyday guy with a Jersey accent did something incredible and any one reading this can follow his formula to achieve great things as well. The formula is simple: never give up.

The genius and humor of Dickens. Such a pleasure.
Revisado: 09-11-16
Where does The Pickwick Papers rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
In the top five
What other book might you compare The Pickwick Papers to and why?
Dickens is such a masterful writer it is hard to make comparisons. Against others of his books this was the lightest and most enjoyable. Another book that I found as enjoyable to listen to although very different was The Rosie Project. It also did a good job of the trick of misunderstood impressions.
What about Simon Prebble’s performance did you like?
Brilliant reading. Every character stood out clearly and each personality captured in his phrasing and tone.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
A sleeping Mr Pickwick being wheeled into town to face charges of trespassing
Any additional comments?
Let the rich vivid prose take you away to another time. Not a simpler time. But one in which the author worked to fix the tragedies of society.

Historia
In the autumn of 1938, Germany's reichsführer, Heinrich Himmler, is growing frustrated at the British using their regional power in India to block the passage of an SS expedition to Tibet. Determined to spite them, he plots to steal something the British hold dear and have failed for the seventh time that spring to achieve: a first summit of Mount Everest. Seventy years later, seasoned mountain guide Neil Quinn's ninth visit to the top of the world's highest mountain, this time in charge of the 16-year-old son of a Long Island billionaire, begins to unravel.

Two great stories interwoven.
Revisado: 09-11-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. The writing is intelligent and always interesting. The characters well defined. Two sets of heels and villains to root for and contrast.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Joseph Becker. His ability to survive and do the right thing.
What does Harry Farthing bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
It can be tricky when authors narrate as well. He does a pretty good job but has difficulty keeping consistent with the accents and genders. That said, he is very easy to listen too and who better to get the interpretation right.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The suspense and interplay of past and present story lines was very interesting. Below that was the question: this being historical fiction that could rewrite the actual events how believable would the ending be. The author handled it well and left me satisfied.

Deep in the jungle of Peru, where so much remains unknown, a black, skittering mass devours an American tourist whole. Thousands of miles away, an FBI agent investigates a fatal plane crash in Minneapolis and makes a gruesome discovery. Unusual seismic patterns register in a Kanpur, India, earthquake lab, confounding the scientists there. During the same week, the Chinese government "accidentally" drops a nuclear bomb in an isolated region of its own country.

The next B disaster movie
Revisado: 09-11-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would reduce the amount of obvious and uninteresting character backstory. Made the story too telly instead of showy. Also the author would choose the wrong time often to digress and any tension build up in the story line would dissipate
Would you recommend The Hatching to your friends? Why or why not?
No. Too cliche and not well enough written.
Which scene was your favorite?
The spider attack on the plane.
Could you see The Hatching being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I can see this being turned into a B movie. Don't expect there to be any major names.
Any additional comments?
I gave the narrator a four because didn't want to blame him for the poor writing. The only gripe with the narrator was the lack of gravitas in his delivery. This may have had more to do with the authors use of too cute dialogue at the wrong time.

Decent story marred by so-so writing and reading
Revisado: 05-27-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Some of the logic in the book is poor. Attempts to build suspense with week devices. Like the way the hero (a DA) is treated by the police with very little incriminating circumstances. Didn't make sense. This type of bad logic crops up in other places in the book.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Woods?
The ones that stick out are representative of the bad logic mentioned above.
Did Scott Brick do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
No. I wish I had listened to the preview first because I don't like his style and have struggled with another book by him. He has a clipped and almost bored sounding way of reading. It isn't convincing when he tries to be dramatic. It's a bit like listening to Captain Kirk. This style infests his dialogue as well making his characters often sound the same as each other.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No.
