Historia
Before he was nicknamed “Sting” by the leader of a local show band in northeast England, Gordon Sumner knew he was meant for more than his working-class background promised. He just didn’t know how to get there. In Upon Reflection, hear the singular talent trace his unlikely rise from his days as a young husband and father working as a local schoolteacher, to risking everything on a fateful move to London, and joining an aspiring punk band called The Police.

Historia
One of the world's most renowned theoretical physicists, Carlo Rovelli has entranced millions of readers with his singular perspective on the cosmos. In Helgoland, he examines the enduring enigma of quantum theory. The quantum world Rovelli describes is as beautiful as it is unnerving. Helgoland is a treeless island in the North Sea where the 23-year-old Werner Heisenberg made the crucial breakthrough for the creation of quantum mechanics, setting off a century of scientific revolution.

Best beginning on Quantum Mechanics, Endured the Ending
Revisado: 09-22-21
I appreciated the breadth of the poetic closure but unfortunately don’t find the same level of resolution that I got from Rovelli’s initial chapters. Having read multiple books now on Quantum Mechanics and QEW, I found this books breakdown of the initial pieces not only the most enlightening but also the most personal. It seems multiple authors after 100 years of quantum mechanics are attempting to make the inexplicable, accessible or at least to more accurately understand its implications -even if the math and its models of reality are beyond our collective zeitgeist…

Historia
In this fascinating and thought-provoking book, author Nick Lane brings together the latest research findings in the exciting field of mitochondria research to reveal how our growing understanding of mitochondria is shedding light on how complex life evolved, why sex arose (why don't we just bud?), and why we age and die. This understanding is of fundamental importance, both in understanding how we and all other complex life came to be, but also in order to be able to control our own illnesses, and delay our degeneration and death.

Nick Lane Continues to ask the Vital Questions
Revisado: 06-12-19
If your looking to increase your understanding of what present science can tells us about the origins and nature of being alive - this book is an excellent place to begin and journeys a long way down the road.
Nick Lane does a wonderful job of bringing the reader along, on his search to understand cellular biology and complex eukaryotic life. He accomplishes this by providing the reader the pertinent history relative to our twisting path of understanding using the mitochondria's pivotal influence as our guide.

Don't kill the Messenger
Revisado: 03-14-17
I've heard that many people don't like Yuval Noah Harari's second book nearly as much as "Sapiens"
Really this is completely understandable when considering that Sapiens has all of us a the central figure of the story. Homo Deus is NOT this; it has at its center no hero, no answers and even more disturbingly, the latest set of deep and meaningful questions to confront humanity. These new questions aren't the age old ones of individual consciousness: Who am I? What's the meaning of life? How long do I have?
They are questions on the level of the species which undermine the dominant ideology of our time if not stealing our dreams for the future.
As the reader you might easily shrug this off and enjoy the concepts presented however for the same reasons we found Harari so compelling in "Sapiens," is the same REASON we can't shake his completely lucid characterization of the predicament humanity finds itself in presently.
Where Sapiens showed our progress and left us hopefully contemplating our happiness unfortunately Homo Deus leaves us with three questions that are more intractable and a sense that even if we answer them, they'll bring no solace...in our brief future.

Beyond the Hype
Revisado: 01-31-17
This is not fiction, it's very real. If your not a person who values the Boy Scout or those people in life that are paragons of virtue, and value wit and sarcasm - this book isn't for you...
On the other hand if you value understanding the day in and day out, of honorably living ones life, and seeing how this matters in our world of immediate gratification and entertainment culture, then this book is inspired.

Historia
One hundred thousand years ago, at least six human species inhabited the Earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations, and human rights; to trust money, books, and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables, and consumerism?

Worthy of Being Required Reading in High School
Revisado: 11-17-16
If you could sum up Sapiens in three words, what would they be?
The Entire History of Homosapiens from 200,000 years ago.
What other book might you compare Sapiens to and why?
I have no book worthy of a comparison other than say James A. Michener's the source...
Have you listened to any of Derek Perkins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I do not recall but his performance was very good.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No!
Any additional comments?
The scope and perspective on human history provided by this book is put together superbly.
It draws so many pieces together into one comprehensive, chronological picture of our collective trajectory through time.
