Narrator kills the story
Revisado: 10-02-23
I've listened to the first 4 books in this series and I do enjoy the characters and the setting, and most of the plots. What kills my enjoyment for this series is the narrator. He speaks so slowly and has a staccato way of reading 2 words, long pause, reading 2 more words, long pause, and so forth for every character that speaks, and even in some of the exposition. He reminds me of a bad William Shatner impression. I have to speed the book up to 1.25 to make the pacing semi-normal and bearable to listen to.
Not all of his character voices are pleasant to listen too, but if someone were to give him some feedback no making the speech cadence more normal, that would greatly improve the listener experience.

Historia
Late October 1909, and the season of ghouls and things that go bump in the night has descended on the village of Littleton Cotterell. Lady Hardcastle and her trusted lady’s maid, Florence, find themselves hosting a colorful cast of actors whose spooky moving picture, The Witch’s Downfall, is being shown to mark Halloween. But things take a macabre turn when the first night’s screening ends with a mysterious murder, and the second night with another. One by one the actors turn up dead in ways that eerily echo their film.

Why does the narrator whisper the last word in every sentence?!
Revisado: 10-15-20
Had to stop this one a couple of hours in because I couldn’t stand the whispering way the narrator spoke. I had listened to the book before this and couldn’t remember why I stopped listening to this series. I remembered. I may read this book to finish it, but won’t be listening to this narrator again.

Less mystery - more women empowerment novel
Revisado: 02-28-20
I've read all 4 of these novels and they all have a distinctive lefty philosophy that I'm willing to overlook if the mystery is good enough. This one had too many "man bad - woman amazing" story lines that disrupted the mystery (btw I'm a woman - before people think I'm just a toxic male).

Pretty Good
Revisado: 02-20-20
Decent cozy mystery set in my favorite time period. I enjoyed it for the most part. Just a few minor annoying repeated sayings like “as sure as bread is bread” and “Posey was about to tell the inspector when...” something happens to stop it, took me out of the narrative. Feels like one last edit would have made the story more enjoyable.

Had high hopes...
Revisado: 05-19-17
What disappointed you about Keystone?
Raven is annoying. She has "honor" issues about paying for her own food, but has no problem using sex to try and get men to feed her. I had a hard time pulling for her or wanting to hear her story unfold. There is ZERO chemistry between the leads. Maybe it is due to the ridiculous arguments the two have about the dumbest subjects. The author is trying to create tension and it does not come across as natural or believable.
Has Keystone turned you off from other books in this genre?
No.
How could the performance have been better?
If the main love interest is Irish, the narrator should be able to pull of a believable accent.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. I wanted to find a new series to dive into, but this one isn't it. For reference, I loved the Cat and Bones books from Jeaniene Frost.
Any additional comments?
I might try the Mageri series since that series has better reviews.

Meh... ok as far as it goes
Revisado: 04-13-17
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The title characters are incredibly credulous and don't seem to do much investigating. They don't do simple things like show a photo of a missing person to the person they are questioning about her. They seem to lack knowledge of basic investigative techniques. If you are ok with this, the rest of the book is fine.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The time period is one of my favorites (1920's). The detectives' lack of investigation is the least interesting. There seems to be quite a bit of description of how much the constable eats that could have been spent fleshing out the investigation.
Have you listened to any of Ben Allen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I haven't heard anything by Allen, but he does a fine job with the accents and characters. He made the story more interesting.
Could you see Empty Vessels being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No.

Do not waste your time
Revisado: 02-14-17
What disappointed you about Covenant College?
So many things... the story was inane. The protagonist was equal parts spoiled, entitled, self-absorbed and rude. I kept hoping some great calamity would befall her so she would change fundamentally. I gave up at chapter 10. To be fair, I got the collection of books for free and only paid 2.99 for the audio book. I wish I could get the 2.99 back.
I had hoped this story would be sort of like the Magicians, something with a cool magic system and great powerful protagonist. That didn't happen.
Would you ever listen to anything by Amanda M. Lee again?
Probably not.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator was TERRIBLE. She can't do voices. The girls all sound whiny and annoying and the guys all sounded dumb. Her characterization of the protagonist really made me hate her more.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not that I could find. I might some day, when desperate for something to do, read these books. I will not listed to this narrator again.

Revisado: 12-04-16
What disappointed you about The Never Hero?
The story is all over the place, and the protagonist is whiny. The plot is convoluted, and yet parts are completely predictable.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Back to Terry Pratchett.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He cannot do a female voice without making her sound whiny and sing-song.
What character would you cut from The Never Hero?
All of them.
Any additional comments?
I won't be anxiously awaiting the second in this series.

Dan Stevens as Poirot
Revisado: 04-05-16
I am a huge fan of Christie and partial to David Suchet's characterization. He is and will be in my mind the only Poirot. Hugh Fraser is my favorite narrator because of my love for the show. With that said, Dan Stevens has a lovely voice and does a very good Suchet as Poirot reading. Well worth the money or a credit!
